Ravens cornerback Cary Williams won’t be fined for pushing ref
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Cary Williams will not be fined for pushing an official during Super Bowl XLVII, reports USA Today.
Williams pushed head linesman Steve Stelljes out of the way as he got up after being taken to the ground during a scuffle after Ravens safety Ed Reed picked off San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick during the second quarter of the Ravens’ 34-31 victory over the 49ers on Sunday. Williams was not penalized on the play.
“It was a situation where I didn’t see who the heck I pushed. Those guys kicked my helmet off, took my helmet off man, it’s just a part of the process. Whatever,” Williams said after the game. “It’s a reaction. You see teammates out there getting hit late, guys pulling guys after the whistle. My helmet came off, I couldn’t barely see, and I just reacted. It is what it is.”
The league did not say why they didn’t fine Williams. Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton bumped an official earlier this season and he was fined $21,000.
If anything makes me feel that this superbowl was given to the Ravens, it's this. You can debate the no call on the 9ers last drive, but you can NOT debate that this guy pushed a ref, HARD, and the ref knew it was him and that he was pushed and did nothing. Inexcusable. Now the league is backing the action so they won't have to admit that the player should have been ejected.
why isn't anyone mentioning the punches he threw with his left to the guy on the ground, right before he shoved the ref? pretty weak punches it looked like, but punches nonetheless......
Consistent with a year full of selective enforcement approach that Roger the Bounty Hunter brought to the league. He's as disgracful as the overpaid worthless officials who manipulate the outcomes that he desires. Most players are suspended multiple games for such an act but now only if you're on a team of which Roger disapproves. Fire the piece of dog excrement before he ruins the league completely. Let him run a bank or be a tea party candidate like the rest of the white collar criminals.
Boy oh boy the NFL sure must love the Ravens to let them get away with all this kind of stuff and no fine when other guys get fined though they did turn off the lights trying to break the Ravens momentum because the game was fixed because the NFL wanted the Forty Niners to win except they wanted Ray the murdered Lewis to win so they didn't call any holds or other penalties on the Ravens at the end of the game and Joe Flacco is a lousy quarterback and should have never got the mvp....whew, and I'm just getting started!
@Rickapolis You said all that in one sentence. I think they will teach you punctuation when you start second grade.
I guess if you are a Raven playing in the Superbowl, you need to BI#€H Slap the ref to draw a flag, get ejected or fined.
@Rob24 I heard that there has been a news conference scheduled for tomorrow at which point someone from the NFL will admit that the league forced the officials to make call in favor of the Ravens. Great job by you and the rest of football detectives! You forced the league to admit to the big conspiracy.
Was there a call on the Ravens in the entire game? Nothing for nothing, but the Ravens got away with murder all game (kind of like their spiritual leader).
@l.czolgosz66 you're a moron. both teams got away with plenty of questionable no-calls. and if you can't see that, you either weren't watching the game or you're just a biased fool like most of the clowns that comment on this site. i'm not saying the no-calls were right, but don't pretend they were geared towards just one team.
@Aldo Compare the # of penalties called on the Ravens with the Niners, idiot. Hell, how does a player push a referee in anger and not get penalized!?
@l.czolgosz66 so, let me get this straight, if two teams playing in the same game don't have the same exact number of penalties, then there's an obvious conspiracy happening? it couldn't just be that, i don't know, one team is actually committing more penalties?? yeah, you're a real genius. having said that, i certainly don't disagree with your point about Cary Williams. he should have been ejected. but that doesn't mean the refs rigged the game. if the lights hadn't gone out (by accident - no, it wasn't part of a conspiracy), this game would have been a blowout. the Ravens won and deserved to win - they were the better team. get over it.
By not fining or suspending a player after he clearly pushes a referee in anger, you are just encouraging that sort of behavior to happen again. It's bad enough to see a lot of poor sportsmanship with the trash-talking, and coaches like the Harbaugh brothers baiting the officials. and players shoving each other after the whistle blows to end a play. But now the league seems to be saying it's okay to shove an official......it doesn't make sense. The NFL needs to do a better job of cleaning up it's game.
@alkohollick0101 Come on, he was just showing the ref his impression of Elaine Benes from Seinfeld.
@alkohollick0101 I agree 100%! Goodell is the biggest idiot ever. There is no consistency in anything he does.
Same thing happened to Harrison Smith early in the season--barely even touched the ref, but did, and was ejected. I seem to recall that both the push and the ejection were "part of the process".
The NFL is protecting their man Boger. This is really bad theater. NFL decides they want Boger in the Superbowl and then pretend there were no mistakes.
NFL covering its tracks. Fining Williams will just mean that the NFL admits a mistake was made. So now the solution is to pretend like nothing happened.
I bet one day some player is going to be making an excuse like, "“It was a situation where I didn’t see who the heck I drilled and broke a few bones."
So, football player pushes ref in the heat of the moment and nothing happens.
Basketball player shoves ref/baseball player shoves ump in the heat of the moment and a multiple game suspension is coming down on top of the automatic ejection. Way to police your sport, NFL.
The precedent is set, if you want to shove a ref, do it in the Super Bowl.
@asterism1 Good one.
The NFL can't fine Williams without drawing attention to the fact Williams should have been ejected. They foolishly think no fines will move the discussion away from the horrible officiating. In the age of Facebook, twitter etc? Good luck with that.
The NFL marketed this as Ray Lewis last game 24-7 for 2 weeks prior to kickoff. They had a result they wanted so rather then risk a fair game they rigged the system so the ref they wanted worked the Superbowl. The NFL is no longer a sport. It's "sports entertainment" much like wrestling with storylines and predetermined outcomes.
+you mad bro?/ you didnt mention all the NO CALLS against the 40whiners ???? Flacco hit way out of bounds and late, Crabtree pushing clearly off Graham to get open, the fouls in the pile pulling off Williams helmet, hitting him while hes in the pile, mugging by Culliver on Smith the whole game, late hit by #49 during the game, o line holding like two 16 year olds in the back seat of a car, get over it bad calls not made on both sides !
@tobig4u exactly. @nflguy49 you're a moron.
No fine, just like all the no-calls on the Ravens.
Ridiculous, NFL lost a lot of respect from me for the officials rolling over for the Ravens.
No holding call on Jones' runback, and multiple instances of refs swallowing their flag on the 49ers goal-to-go series: no helmet-to-helmet call when Smith speared Crabtree, no holding call on Smith when he mugged Crabtree.
And they don't even fine a player that shoved a ref, let alone kick him out of the game like they should have.
@SportPage You wanna lose respect for the NFL, go watch super bowl 40 again.
@Scramble You want a good chuckle or two? Read the paranoid posts from the conspiracy theorists that keep popping up around here. By the way, the NFL does not care if you respect as long as you keep watching, which you will.
@JoeCabot And pay $8 for a $2 can of beer.
@SportPage More NFL conspiracies? You guys are amusing with your paranoia. Yes, the refs all got together and decided to pick on the 49ers. It is only football. Come in from the ledge. The season is over.
What a crock. Newton bumps a ref and gets fined. This clown pushes with two hands and gets nothing at all.
