Report: NFL Considering widening field dimensions to combat head injuries

The National Football League is looking to the Canadian Football League for ideas on how to make the game safer – including widening the field of play, according to a report in the National Football Post.

According to the report, the NFL competition committee considered widening the field at meetings last year and speculation is they will toss around the possibility again. CFL fields are 195 feet wide, while NFL fields are 160 feet wide, a difference of 35 feet. The thinking is that the extra space will reduce congestion in the middle of the field, leading to fewer hits and, by extension, fewer serious head injuries.

However, the flip side of the argument is that with more time and space to run at ball handlers, hits could become more, not less violent.

What Fool proposed this "idea"?

Get all the extra people off the sidelines. The sidelines look like a NYC subway stop at rush hour.  The overcrowding is so bad they coaching staff has to come on the field for privacy.

These people are idiots. One would think that widening the field would give players MORE space to attain MORE speed and thus inflict harder blows. Isn't THAT why they moved the kickoff spot 5 yards closer? Once again, idiots.

They need to see if there are fewer head injuries in the CFL, and I expected to see there was such a finding. Instead, there was no comment--just conjecture. Pretty flaky.

Apparently pee-wee, pop warner, high school, and the NCAA figured something out that the NFL still can't: MAKE ALL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT MANDATORY. The players and their idiotic union need to look at the local pee wee game to figure what the NFL is doing wrong. They think that getting bigger, faster, and stronger also means wearing less/no leg pads and no mouthguards. Stupid.

The middle school me could have figured this out after getting trucked over and NOT INJURED by an enormous oaf of a "child" named Damian. Not injured because I was padded up like a medieval knight.

not to mention eliminate great sideline catches, cause more int's when the qb tries to throw out of bounds to avoid a sack, put coverage units on special teams at a disadvantage trying to cover the KR or PR, and probably 30 more reasons i cant think of right now. Stupid idea by a retard of a comissioner.

Instead of taking an approach based on guessing what may work, they need to commission a major independent study on how to make football safer without fundamentally changing the game.  They need harsher punishments for helmet-to-helmet hits.  Football is going to change.  The serious brain damage players are suffering is not acceptable going forward.  A panel of sports doctors, NFL executives and former players needs to thoroughly study the issue and issue a report which the NFL can use to make changes that WILL make players safer.  The current practice of trial and error is not working.

@Michael39 there is no way to prevent brain injuries in tackle football. People like you who are trying to pussify the game need to shut your mouths because you dont know what youre talking about.

@touseyd  @Michael39 I find it disappointing that all these people tout better equipment/helmets as the way to prevent concussions. Concussions are caused by the brain moving within its confines and getting bruised. You could wear an oversized helmet with air bags in it and your brain would still get bruised when it stopped suddenly and banged the inside of your skull.
