The seven-year, $175 million contract extension the Seattle Mariners were prepared to offer pitcher Felix Hernandez may have hit a snag.

According to a report from ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Mariners have developed concern about the status of Hernandez’s pitching elbow, and negotiations over the contract extension have hit a snag because of that.

CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports in a tweet that the negotiations could take a little while to be complete:

Hernandez has pitched 1,620 innings in his eight-year career, all of which has been spent with the Mariners. Hernandez has made the All-Star game three out of the last four seasons and won the AL Cy Young award in 2010.

Just raise the price of beer in the stadium to $11 a bottle and pay the man anyways. Most of these professional teams use monopoly money anyways.

Mariners are signing their own death certificate if they sign Hernandez to a 7 year, $175M deal.  Odds are high that he will suffer a significant drop in performance, given his career workload and age, and when he goes down, he takes 30% of the payroll with him.

DanaBunner Its not a 7 year deal.  Pay attention, its free.
