Anquan Boldin will retire if the Ravens cut him
Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin told NBC Sports Radio that if the team cuts him, he will retire. Boldin is due for $6 million in 2013, with one year remaining in his four-year, $25 million contract.
The Ravens have $15.3 million in cap space, but the team has several big players to pay. Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco is in the process of negotiating a long-term deal that will likely make him one of the highest-paid QBs in the NFL. The Ravens also need to pay Paul Kruger, Dannell Ellerbe and Ed Reed, all of whom are set to enter free agency.
GALLERY: BIGGEST RETIREMENTS OF 2013
Wide receivers Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones were heroes in the postseason and Super Bowl for the Ravens, hurting Boldin’s chances of staying with the team. Even though Boldin had an impressive postseason run, with 22 passes for 380 yards in four games and four touchdowns, his regular season performance might not be enough to save his spot.
At only 32, Boldin would fare well in free agency, but he’s made it clear that if he doesn’t get his $6 million from the Ravens, he’s done. If Boldin does get cut by Baltimore, he’ll join Ray Lewis as a Raven ending his career with a Super Bowl win.
Anquan Boldin just told me he will RETIRE if he is cut by the Ravens. They will be his last team. #NFL #Profootballtalk—

10 Ravens account for $69M in 2013 cap space. And that doesn't acct for Flacco, Reed, Ellerbe, Kruger, Dickson, Pitta: nfl.com/news/story/0ap…—

Boldin looked awfully good in the post season, especially using his physical ability to get the better of the covering CBs. You don't think that a team like the Patriots (and Brady) could use Boldin. He is a premier receiver.
Please cut him and Cardinals do whatever it takes to get him back.
Boldin can still play...that's a a damn shame if the Ravens don't bring him back...
I think it would be a shame if Boldin retires. He still has a lot to give to the game, if the Ravens are willing to let him walk, he should go somewhere he;s wanted. I'm a NY Giants fan, can we get a discount??? Maybe another ring?? Just asking?
I know.. As a fan I can always dream of the day they right this ship.
On the further review . . . Q will play again.
Loyal to his team, I like that.
Very very few NFL players retire when they still are physically able to compete. I can name 1: Jake Plummer. No way Boldin retires.
@M as in Mancy I agree he won't retire. But occasionally very good players do retire. In addition to Barry Sanders, there was Robert Smith and Tiki Barber.
@DanaBunner
Good point. But it ain't occasional. The number of guys who walk away still relatively dominant are nothing compared to NFL cut lists and phone call free agents trying to hang on. The numbers say that Boldin keeps in going...
@M as in Mancy How about HOF Jim Brown at the top of his game in 1966
@ptbnl @M as in Mancy Robert Smith, RB, Vikings
@ptbnl I'm rusty on my Jim Brown history.
@M as in Mancy @ptbnl Jim Brown retired as the all time leader in TDs, rushing yardage, rushing average and leading the NFL in rushing 8 of 9 years. He abruptly retired at 31 to go into Hollywood movies. He is still considered by many to be the best running back of all time. I like Barry Sanders too.
@M as in Mancy You're forgetting Barry Sanders.
@TDG @M as in Mancy his team was stuck in neutral. so he retired.
@TDG Amen to that. That dude was incredible.
Come to Oakland
@Papi Del Negro..... Dont ask lol, come to Oakland. Now why would he do something insane like that.
@Papi Del Negro..... Dont ask I would guess there is a better chance that hell freezes over than Boldin going from the Super Bowl champs to the Raiders. He played for some bad Card teams, I think the last thing he would want is to go to another shipwreck. I think they should renegotiate with him and bring him back for around 4m.
@Papi Del Negro..... Dont ask No way the Raiders can afford him. They're in salary cap Hell.
