Chris Carpenter likely out for season, could be done for career

MLB

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter is likely out for the season and could be done for his career, according to news on Tuesday from General Manager John Mozeliak in a report from the Associated Press.

Mozeliak said he doesn’t think Carpenter, 37, will pitch again after suffering yet another nerve injury that initially caused him to miss most of last season for the Cardinals. Carpenter has a renewed numbness and bruising in his right hand and shoulder. He had undergone surgery last July, returning to the Cardinals to pitch three games toward the end of the season and made three more appearances in playoff games for St. Louis. According to Mozeliak, Carpenter will undergo more evaluations but the prognosis does not look positive.

For a career, Carpenter is 144-94 with a 10-4 record in the postseason with an ERA OF 3.00 in 18 playoff starts.

Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com tweeted Tuesday afternoon that the news appears to be all but an announcement of his retirement from the game.
