Amani Toomer: Ray Lewis ‘caricature’ of himself, full of ‘hypocrisy’

Former New York Giants wide receiver Amani Toomer sounded off on Ray Lewis during Wednesday’s Media Day, calling the Baltimore Ravens linebacker a ‘caricature’ of himself and said he expects his on-field antics from someone in the WWE.

Despite the comments, Toomer said he loves Lewis as a player and considers him a first-ballot Hall of Fame selection, but he told USA Today Sports that Lewis is making his current run to the Super Bowl all about himself and not the overall team, adding that the Giants would have never allowed one player to single themselves out like that during the season:

“It’s definitely all about him. Once a guy goes to the center of the field, goes into the victory formation on the last play of his last home game. I just don’t think the Giants or any organization I’ve ever been a part of, even growing up, would allow somebody to single themselves out like that. [I]f you single yourself out after you make a play, that’s one thing. But to walk out on the field reminds me of the WWE, like The Rock coming out. You’re becoming a caricature of yourself. It’s exhausting. I don’t know why somebody would want that.”

Toomer, who lost to Lewis’ Ravens in the Super Bowl as a member of the Giants in 2001, also thinks it’s a bunch of “hypocrisy” for Lewis to call himself a religious man when Toomer believes his track record says otherwise:

“If you want to say you’re Mr. Religious and all of that, have a clean record. Don’t say all of that stuff if you know there’s stuff that might come back. Those are the things that, when I look at him, I just think hypocrisy.”

Lewis plead guilty to obstruction of justice as part of his plea agreement involving a double-homicide in Atlanta in 2000. He is also facing allegations that he used deer-antler spray to speed up his rehab earlier in the season, as detailed in a story that Sports Illustrated broke this week. The spray contains an ingredient banned by the NFL. Lewis responded by saying he is “too blessed to be stressed.”

Obviously Toomer does not understand what its all about ATTEMPTING to be all you can be as a Christian. Before a good friend of mine was born again...but more importantly - started tring to be the BEST CHRISTIAN he could be. He made plenty of mistakes. Slept with as many ladies he was interested in, drank as much as he wanted etc.. But after he made a choice to TRY and be the best Christian he could be...I saw the change! He only slept with ladies he felt could become a wife. He actually stopped drinking immediately! And eventually he stopped sleeping with women. My point...it takes time even if you are trying to give it your all for most people. And even after you make the change and are doing well - there will still be mistakes. You are human! But even after all is going well....if you look into my past - before I actually made the change. You will see the signs in someone's life that show that he or she was a sinner. So obviously if you look a Ray Lewis's life prior to 2001 and the fruit that life bore...you will see bad things. For instance...all those kids by different women. Now that is one of the things he preaches to the young guys about. Don't be like me!

I'm still trying to understand how does the action's of two stupid friends of yours make YOU a murderer? Out of all of the accounts that I've read, this isn't one mention that he killed anyone but that he was a conspirator to covering for those two Nitwits. I'm still not seeing the connection........

And for all of you saying he was guilty because he settled out with a plea deal, that is common amongst the wealthy. Especially since so many people try to rip you off when you're rich.

The bigger question is, would you accept a plea deal if you thought someone had killed someone you loved? I'm guessing no. There wouldn't be any amount of money for you accept such a thing.

And comparing Lewis to OJ is apples and oranges! Starting with the Plea deal!! You think OJ's attorney's didn't try to get the families of Nicole Simpson and the Goldman's to accept a Plea deal? You be they did!! And they told Johnny Cochran to SHOVE IT!!! Which is what you do when you think someone is guilty of a heinous crime. OJ may have gotten off, but that was the result of how the justice system works for the wealthy. He PAID those families because he was the richest person on the scene and for trying to not rat out the people responsible for killing those kids! Which does make him guilty of obstruction but NOT a murderer! Which again, I'm still trying to figure out how you're considered a murderer, when nothing was pre planned, and he WASN'T the actual person killing anyone!

I will say, I'm not Raven's or Ray Lewis fan but I think it's ridiculous to label someone wrongfully just because you don't like them.

Stop hating....

1. He was not guilty. Nuff Said.

2. There isn't a one of us that doesn't have some skeleton in their closet. But God said Repent and You are forgiven. How dare you criticize him for NOW believing and voicing his Love for the Lord Jesus Christ. It's his testimony and your hater.

3. He's been a staple for the Ravens since their inception. We love him, he's done now and we encourage his dance and who wouldn't be happy and dancing celebrating such victories.

1. how you know he did it. where u thre. did u see it happen up close and personal, Then how can anyone say ray lewis comited murder if u didnt see it. Specialy when he was found not guity, Joe730  if u know ray did it then u are gulity of murder for not turning your evidence over too the police. You are just as guilty.

2. How can anyone say someone isnt religous. How can anyone speak for anyones thoughts and feelings. People on death row are religous and kust because they comited a crime doesnt mean there not religous,

3. His dance. I was there at the colts ravens game. The players, fans, and coaches called and chanted ray ray ray. everyone else wanted that. How can you be selfish doing what everyone else asked or told you to do. lease think before you talk. People make me sick with how stupid ignorant and argonat people can be. the supidness of this country and the lake of thought people use is amazing. People get dumber and dumber as the years go by, All you do is prove other people right and make your self look stupid. Go RAVENS, Still ahtting after the win keep hating because the ravens are here to stay,

Ray lewis is as slime for murdering two Akron kids and then paying millions to get off  with murder. shame on America for letting this happen. 2 kids gone just like that laying dead in an Atlanta street and Ray Lewis rides off in his stretch Limo to change his clothes and burn them. amazing and sad. Now Ray evokes God's name as his savior. sadder.

So now Toomer is a DA or a judge ? Whatever happened in 2000 in Altlanta, Lewis will be judge later on by the All Mighty. About the "WWE thing" : well yes it has a litttle bit of that but it does not really matter. Toomer needs to grow up.

Coming from a guy that slapped his ex wife Yola around, pissed on her clothes, and threw her laptop in a river (so she couldn't finish law school) calling someone a hypocrite is, well hypocritical.

wow ok, so him doing his little dance at midfield on the last play of the game, during his last home game is selfish?  that is just a really ignorant comment.  what about teams who call timeout to pull their players so the fans can give them a standing ovation?  is that selfish?  i think ray deserved to come in for one play on offense and do his dance.  it was his last home game of a storied career.  the other stuff amani said, whatever, but his first comment is just ignorant.

Hey Amani, so you're saying that someone who has done wrong in life can't turn their life around for the better? Impossible for them to find Jesus and become a better person in the process? Do yourself  a favor and go work on another God-awful Football show and be grateful that David Tyree got you a super bowl ring

Wow, I wish all the trolls would got profootballtalk of nil.comc and earn stupid coins that buy you nothing. The fact is that people who abuse religion like Ray Lewis are the true blasphemes and falls prophets of our time. God does not care about football. The bible acutally would guide a Ray Lewis to:

1. Give up all of his possession and material wealth to good causes.

2. Speak the truth at all times, regardless of wether it be incriminating.

3. Spread the word of God.

At the same time we should not fault or judge Ray Ray for his abuse of religion for personal gains. It is part of his journey. True christians would continually implore to examine his life and continue to make changes IF Ray Lewis is truly a follower of god. As christians we have to be meek, forgiving and loving. Ray has so much power and influence, that if we truly want Ray to be a man of god and positive influence we would give him love, forgiveness, but most importantly GUIDANCE. So far he has only used gods word to improve himself, to himself. I hope someone can get through to him and help him become a world wide influencer of gods word.

I love Ray's passion. Go get another ring buddy! So, Lewis' behavior is embarassing but Jim Harbaugh's isn't? We would all be better off if we cherished things and did't worry about judging someone who plays like his life depends on it

m.guszak
m.guszak

Toomer is 100% correct! Lewis' behavior on the field is embarrassing. Crying hysterically during the anthem. Dancing like some crazed Angel's Dust user and ALWAYS calling attention to himself. I can say that I am rooting for San Fran for one reason, Ray Lewis does not play for them. The Ravens have done so many things to get here and so many players have contributed (especially Flacco), but all we get his Ray Lewis, Ray Lewis. Sick of it!

Toomer is saying what a lot of people are thinking. Lewis is a great player, certainly one of the best ever. He is also one of the best ever self promoters. I've always felt that all the cheerleader stuff is for the cameras. Look at the expressions of a lot of his teammates while he is ranting....many look bored.

@DerekAllen True but six illegitimate children by four women?  You'd think he would marry Tatyana McCall if he's still with her or whomever he's messing around with.  But all of that is between him and God but when you put that out there people who don't have the connection to God that believers do will think: hmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

stabmasterarson21
stabmasterarson21

@VigilanteNY I think the fact that he destroyed evidence and coerced witnesses not to talk puts him in a bad light in that regard.  If he truly is a man of God doesn't he need to go speak with the families of the two dead men and make peace with them???

 @VigilanteNY

I have had this exact same opinion concerning Ray Lewis. He has said in numerous interviews that he had to change the people around him in order to move in a more positive direction in his life. He has also stated that he became a target of the investigation because of his name.

@jazzypudding his Love for the Lord Jesus Christ?  you mean like Jerry Falwell's, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker's and others claiming to be Christians?  That's Lewis' cover-up, he's the same dog just re-arranged his fleas.

Lewis is a hypocrite, and a liar.

Jazzy:  can you explain why the suit he was wearing "that night" the murders occurred was asked for by the prosecutors and Lewis still to this day claims he has no idea and it must've just disappeared.

He's as guilty as OJ....but you prolly think OJ's innocent too.

@joeshine730 If nothing else, it shows that the "justice" system is consistent. Regardless of whether you're black or white, if you're RICH enough, you can do whatever you want.  Just like O.J. (the first time when he was still rich) and the criminals on Wall street who crashed the global economy, escaped any and all prosecution, and are now back to making record profits while things are just beginning to improve for everyone else.  The system works, just not for ordinary folk.

@joeshine730 Please show us the evidence you've compiled to prove R Lewis murdered 2 Akron kids.

There's no statute of limitations when it comes to murder, so after you describe your evidence, I'll be sure it gets delivered to the Fulton Co DA's office.

@Dani Toomer needs to grow up just because he has an opinion?  Maybe you need to grow up cause someone's opinion varies with yours doesn't equate to someone being immature.....got it?

Baltimore loves its teams, and players like Ray Lewis and Cal Ripken love them back. The last kneel down on the field after the Colts game was a salute to the hundreds of thousands of fans that have rooted for him and the Ravens since 1996.

Few fan bases can match Baltimores' for passion. Remember the loudness of Camden Yards in the 2012 playoffs and the Bull Shlt chants at The Bank?

It's just how they do it in the Charm City and Ray Lewis embraces that. Players like Toomer are simply ignorant.

@BigMikeD I haven't seen anyone talk about him like he is a saint.  What they have said is he has changed his life for the better and he is a great leader and motivator of his teammates.  As for Ray's suit, he pled guilty to obstruction of justice for destroying it and lying to the police to protect his friends.  Here are a few other facts you forgot. The prosecutor even conceded that the two "victims" who were both known gang members with violent pasts started the altercation by attacking a member of Ray Lewis's entourage with a bottle.  Secondly, every witness called to testify by either the prosecutor or defense agreed that Ray Lewis did not have a weapon or throw a punch in the altercation.  In fact, the majority of the witnesses said that Ray Lewis appeared to be trying to break up the altercation and usher his friends away.  Given that testimony...How could he have possibly gotten blood on a white suit?

@stabmasterarson21 -I don't dispute that his evidence tampering didn't put him in a bad light. Obviously it did, because we're still talking about it more than a decade later. It still DOESN'T make him a murderer like so many like to refer to him, which is ridiculous. The fact of the matter he was/is a celebrity and he was the richest person on the scene which automatically makes him the #1 target to investigate and to financially go after.

Like I mentioned before, the plea deal isn't something someone would take if you believed someone is responsible for killing a person you love.

In terms of him claiming he's a man of God that's between him and his God to determine as to how authentic he is. Do you I think he's over the top and a hypocrite at times? You bet!! And he's not the only "Holy Roller" I feel that about, but it still doesn't change the fact's of the situation. And no matter what he did afterwards, whether speaking the families of the murdered men, or doing charity, or asking for forgiveness for covering up evidence, you will have people that will say he didn't do enough or that he "should've" done something different to show that he is truly contrite in his actions.

@VigilanteNY I agree with you for the most part.  But still if you put yourself out there as a man of God or a minister or anything of the sort you had better have your act together as far as what we can see in public, etc.  We're all in some way hypocrites, e.g. how many people tell their kids not to do something but they did it in their childhoods, hah hah?

But thanks for that, as I said I agree most of what you said, and I don't want to come off as being HYPERcritical of Ray Lewis, none of us are perfect but the way it went down makes us all wonder, hmmmm?, and that's probably never going to go away unless we hear some ins and outs on what really went down but we will probably never know.
