NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell governs a league in which a majority of players disapprove of the way he does his job. This, according to a recent poll conducted by USA Today, which concluded that just 39% of NFL players approve of Goodell’s work as commissioner.

The poll was given anonymously to 300 current NFL players from December 19 to January 2nd. There is a 5% margin of error in the poll. USA Today reports that, among other things, many respondents pointed to Goodell’s liberal use of fines for violent hits on quarterbacks and receivers as reasons for their disapproval.

Goodell has faced numerous obstacles as commissioner in recent years, and has gotten criticism from all sides for his handling of the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal and the league’s lockout in 2011. The commissioner has also had to deal with growing concerns regarding the safety of football itself, with numerous former players showing signs of dementia and brain damage, and the notable suicide of former San Diego Chargers linebacker Junior Seau, whose family is suing the NFL in a wrongful death lawsuit.

I am quite surprised it was that high!  They do need a football guy for the job.  And I know the perfect choice, Tony Dungy!  Been a player and a coach, understands the game, would be a great ambassador, and would know how to keep players in line without creating an adversarial atmosphere like Goddell has!

I like Goodell.  I think its good that the players and coaches realize that there are consequences for their actions.  So no surprise the players don't like that.  He's done a good job helping clean up the game, and the profits continue to climb.

Curious how rookie players rate the Players Association head Smith, especially those performing very well like, who are locked into their contracts for the first 3 years thanks to the new CBA.

61% down, 39% to go. This bean counter is the worst thing that ever happened to the NFL. From his gross overreaction to the whole Saints "Bountygate", to his desire to eliminate the kickoff.  We need a true football guy in charge.

NFLguy The players don't hire Goodell, they work under his supervision.  Take a poll of many corporations and you'll find the same type of results for the CEO, CFO, CIO, etc.  Having a "true football guy" as the head of the NFL would ruin it in short order because "true football guys" oftentimes rule with emotion over intelligence.

Goodell is not quite the diplomat that Tagliabue was.

so he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.  Getting criticized for big fines on big hits and then in the same breath complaining about the violence of football means players are just schizophrenic.  They want their cake, they'll eat it too and then complain when they get fat.

He can't get to a 9% approval among fans.

MikeArthur I think he will get more approval than that among fans

Players don't count. When you get to 39% approval among owners then give me a call. (Mercury Morris)

Lamdog As if the opinion of a guy who can only succeed on a stacked team without a salary cap means a damn.

That said, it's a good point.

Hardly surprising, really.  No one likes the boss, and given the vast majority of NFL players aren't exactly among the intellectual elite in understanding business realities or the market dynamics of their own sport, 39% is pretty good.  Goodell does a remarkable job considering he's got to juggle TV network idiots and massage the massive egos of the franchise owners, too.

I guess that means only 10 percent of the black players support him....I'm not surprised, they never support whites, or laws. Just about all of them have rap sheets a mile long, only speak ebonics....

Funny; I didn't realize the players actually get a vote on the selection. So what s the point in stirring a pt that has nothing in it?
