Former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has met with the staff of the Tennessee Titans and is close to becoming the team’s assistant head coach, reports ESPN.com.

Williams was suspended indefinitely by the NFL last March for his role in the Saints bounty program. Before Williams can be hired the league has to lift his suspension.

Williams was the ringleader of the Saints’ pay-for-performance bounty program as defensive coordinator in New Orleans and was hired by Rams head coach Jeff Fisher as defensive coordinator before the league started to dig into the Saints bounty program.

Should Williams be reinstated, no obstacles are expected on the contractual front, according to sources. The two sides are familiar with each other with Williams having worked in Tennessee from 1997-2000.

Williams has been a defensive coach in the league since 1990 and helped the Saints win the Super Bowl after the 2009 season.

@Dondada correct me if i'm wrong but i think Lovie's unemployed but continues to get paid. so, if he remains unemployed, it must be his choice. no pressure on him to grab the def coordinator jobs offered to him if he's confident that he deserves to be head coach again. the smart move for him is to wait for about week 9 of next season when coaches are in the hot seat.

@Dondada There have been rumblings that Lovie is not interested in a coordinator position & would rather collect a check from Chicago next year and see what head coach openings come up.

@Pares Hilton  @raja.govindarajan Sean Payton was suspended (for one year). His suspension has been lifted. He has (now) rejoined the Saints. Williams has been suspended indefinitely. Last time I checked his suspension has not been lifted. That means he is not allowed near ANY NFL team in a coaching/advisory capacity. Heck he cannot even sell hot dogs at the stadium. So what does it mean that he is "on the verge of joining the Titans staff"?

@JoeCabot  @Dondada Lovie shouldn't have to go back to being a coordinator.  Seriously guys record is over .500, took a team to the SB and just went 10-6.  Not saying it wasn't time for the Bears to let him go since the offense was so offensive.  But the man should get another HC job.  Surprised he didn't honestly.

@JoeCabot  @Dondada makes sense, its the move I would make. He is a long time removed from his coordinator days, and probably should still be a head coach. Hard to coach a team when management figures that an O-Line is not a necessary commodity to have in the NFL

@raja.govindarajan what i mean is that, it's either he thought that the lifting of Payton's suspension would soon extend to him, or he must have heard of something that made him confident that he'll be back soon in the NFL (did Payton whisper something to him after Sean's meeting with Goodell?) :-)
