The NFL fined Baltimore Ravens safety Bernard Pollard $15,250 for his illegal hit on New England Patriots receiver Wes Welker during Sunday’s AFC Championship Game, according to ProFootballTalk.

The hit occurred on a 24-yard pass during the third quarter with the Patriots up, 13-7, resulting in a 15-yard penalty.

Pollard later knocked New England running back Stevan Ridley out of the game with a vicious fourth-quarter hit that gave the Ravens a key fumble and Ridley a head injury. Pollard was not fined for the hit.

The seven-year veteran and former Chiefs and Texans safety has a history of big hits against the Patriots, including blows that caused ACL tears to quarterback Tom Brady and Welker in 2008 and ’10, respectively, and a high ankle sprain to tight end Rob Gronkowski in last year’s AFC Championship Game.

That is what cheaters and dirty players do. They have little to no skills so they make a name for themselves causing injury. The whole Ravens team is guilty of that though Look at Suggs, Lewis the list goes on and on.....

Pollard is risking his own cerebral health with these hits. Ask Junior Seau if he would have chosen to bring his head up more on his hits to opposing players.....oh, that's right, he had brain damage and committed suicide

That's a little bit more than Frank Gore got fined for not pulling up his socks!

Nobody but Beantown fans feels sorry for that arrogant Brady/Belichek spygate team. Pollard may be over the line but  kocking out Brady, Welker and Gronk for the years past and present will not bring any tears to Patriot opponents.

These helmet-to-helmet rules remind me a bit of the government's attempts at outlawing assault weapons - they have an idea what they want to do, but they can't come up with a usable definition for it.

In the past, there have been some vicious "kill shots" delivered by guys using the crown of their helmet as a weapon.  I'm happy that the league is trying to stop that.  But, guys' helmets touch all the time.  If the offensive guy ducks his head, it's nearly impossible to tackle a him WITHOUT helmets touching.  There has to be some revision of these rules, but getting a clear definition for the refs to use is tough.

One improvement would to differentiate between the crown of the helmet and the side.  Another would be to to exempt the hit frpm penalty if the offensive guy's helmet is at shoulder-level or lower.

Course, the league will likely leave the rules as they are.  They couldn't care less about fairness or safety.  They want to generate max $$$ and shield themselves from lawsuit.  Rules that protect offensive players, even ridiculous rules, work towards both of those goals.

He should have kicked him in the nuts.  It would have been $5250 cheaper!

"Pollard later knocked New England running back Stevan Ridley out of the game with a viscous fourth-quarter hit "

So, Pollard employed a sticky, liquid adhesive-like hit on Ridley?    I'm assuming the writer of this little piece is a professional,  being paid for what he's writing, including his misuse of the language?

The word is  VICIOUS,  o' nameless scribe who doesn't even put his name in the byline. Look it up, moron.

Correction: the helmet to helmet statement was directed to whitezb1974 and not Mr Boisvert.

JimHarper Correction. You are wrong. Whitezb1974 is correct

     Look up the rules.

Bernard Pollard is a dirty player and trys his level best to hurt guys to take them out of the game. I'm from KC and he was like that here too. His hit on Brady was deliberate as was the one on Gronk last year. And  to correct Mr Boisvert, helmet to helmet is not legal at any time.

JimHarper no hes a good player hard its not helmet to helmet are legal and hits you wanna see and im a quarterback in highschool i love big hits it wakes me up

    JimHarper 5 pts

I will answer Mr Martin's comments. The extra $250 you speak of was just compensation for generally being a dirtty player. I am from KC and nobody here liked him when he played here. He goes out to intentionally hurt guys to the point of threatening their careers. Pollard is a low life and should be thrown out of the league.

No one in KC liked a physical, intimidating safety that makes opposing players pay for crossing the middle of the field?  Wow, no wonder the Chiefs suck.

Your response only illustrates your ignorance. This is not about being physical or intimidating. This is about deliberately trying to hurt another player to the point of  possibly ending a guys career. Now that has not happened yet, but he just keeps on trying. You might be surprised to know I am actually rooting for the Ravens to win. It is not about the team. It is about one dirty player.

Was the extra $250 for the unkind words he said about his mother as he was getting up?

#1 ridley got scared n got low as he could to avoid POLLARD..if he had not bent over to HIDE then he wouldnt have knocked HIMSELF OUT..n Welker is a little girl n PATRIOTS LOST BIG!! Ravens Nation is a true hard nose big hitting football team n if u wanna fine people for hitting hard then why have pads n a helmet to begin with

    ThomasBoisvert 5 pts

whers the fine for helmet to helmet on ridley and knocking him OUT

    whitezb1974 7 pts

ThomasBoisvert Helmet to Helmet on a runner is legal.  Helmet to Helmet on a Wide Receiver is legal, after he has caught the ball and is running with it.  Helmet to Helmet on a QB is legal if he is scrambling with the ball and turns himself into a runner.

I am a Pats fan, and I congratulate the Ravens on playing better and winning.  And if Pollard were a free agent, I would tell BB to go and sign him.  He is kind of like a Rodney Harrison.  A heck of a player.  Plays full tilt all the time.  Most of these hits that he gets publicity for were completely legal (at the time).  And blaming him for Welker's knee blowout is a bit unfair as he just happend to be the closest player to him.
