The St. Louis Rams have hired Rob Ryan to be their defensive coordinator, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday. Ryan previously held the same position with the Dallas Cowboys and was fired on Jan. 8 after a lackluster 8-8 season.

Last season, the Rams’ defense was coached by a handful of assistants after defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was suspended by the NFL for his role in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal.

After he was fired, a nonchalant Ryan said he would be out of work for “like five minutes.”

Ryan, the brother of New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and son of former NFL coach Buddy Ryan, started as an NFL assistant in 1994 with the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cowboys missed the playoffs both seasons Ryan was in Dallas. The Cowboys ranked 14th in yards allowed in 2011 and 2012. This year’s team finished 23rd in points allowed. It gave up 31 points a game in the team’s final two games, when the Cowboys were fighting for a playoff berth.

Significant upgrade for the Rams, in my mind.  Fisher should be a good pairing for Ryan, and now that Ryan is finally the DC of a team that isn't being actively sabotaged by a crazy/deluded/incompetent GM/owner, it follows as logical to be more optimistic of his prospects in St. Louis.

Any woman would love Rob's version of 5 minutes.

Rob Ryan has never taken a team to the playoffs as a Defensive Coordinator.  Never.  He's one of the most overrated people in football.  I guess the Rams are aiming for 7-9, 8-8.

Rex Ryan needs a good shower a hair cut and directions how to stay clean and presentable.

They are both (Ryan's) not very good at their craft.  Rex is a better DC than coach and Rob is just a slob.  Man, that was a long 5minutes.

At the very least, he will talk a good game.

@JasonMorrisRVA He's been DC of the Raiders, Browns, Cowboys.  Not exactly gigs that are set for success.

Every one of those franchises is perennially mediocre, regardless of who's been coach or coordinator, because the biggest problem with all three of those franchises for the last decade+ has been the front-office.
