The move had been expected since Yahoo! reported in early December that the team wanted to change its mascot to the Pelicans. Owner Tom Benson had previously said he wanted a new nickname that was more tied to the region. The Hornets nickname followed the franchise when it moved from Charlotte.
Spears reports the team’s colors will be blue, gold and red.

LikeWell they certainly picked out a threatening mascot. I know that whenever I see a pelican my first thought is that of a sleek and fast bird..

LikeIt is good to see a team developing a more appropriate name after a franchise move. Some of the team monikers have no relationship to the team's current location. The Utah Jazz? What's "jazzy" about Salt Lake City? And the Los Angeles Lakers? Lakers was OK for Minnesota, but LA? Ad what about the Los Angeles (Trolley)Dodgers? Don't get me going about the Cardinals. That's a St. Louis name, how can they be in Phoenix?
