The embattled David Akers will remain the San Francisco 49ers’ starting kicker in the Super Bowl, head coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday, according to CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.

“The decision has already been made. David Akers is our kicker,” Harbaugh said.

Akers missed his only field-goal attempt in the 49ers’ 28-24 win over the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game on Sunday, a 38-yard try.

He was only 29-of-42 in the regular season, and the team brought in Billy Cundiff on Jan. 1 to serve as insurance and motivation for Akers.

Akers received death threats last month on Twitter, prompting the NFL and team security to become involved.

During the season, Akers missed overtime kicks twice against the Rams, as the 49ers lost at St. Louis and tied at home. Akers also had a field goal blocked in a Dec. 23 loss at Seattle that cornerback Richard Sherman returned 90 yards for a touchdown.

Unfortunately, after a superb 2011 Akers has become a head case in 2012.

Despite the FG problem, at least he's booming most kickoffs deep into or out of the end zone.

At this point I don't think it really matters as the 49ers are all about getting TD's as they showed with the 4 scored against Atlanta yesterday.
