Reports: Ray Horton furious over Cardinals hiring Bruce Arians as coach

Uncategorized

Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton is furious about being passed over for their head-coaching job, according to multiple reports.

The Cardinals and Bruce Arians came to an agreement on a reported four-year contract Thursday night, with a team option for a fifth year. Yahoo Sports’ Mike Silver reported that Horton — who was still under contract with the Cardinals despite former head coach Ken Whisenhunt’s firing — will be fired as defensive coordinator and replaced by Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Meanwhile, Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910 reported that Horton engaged in a “heated exchange” with general manager Steve Keim after learning of the Cardinals’ decision to go with Arians. Horton thought he would get the gig when Mike McCoy became the head coach of the Chargers.

USA Today’s Mike Garafolo confirmed Jurecki’s report, saying Horton was “pissed.”

The Cardinals and Arians agreed late Thursday night on a contract after meeting Thursday. Arians served as the Colts’ interim head coach for most of last season while Chuck Pagano was being treated for leukemia. He led the Colts to a 9-3 record under his tenure as head coach until Pagano returned to coach the team on Dec. 30 against the Houston Texans.

Before returning to the Colts — where he had spent three seasons as their quarterback coach from 1998-2000 — Arians worked from 2004-11 as the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator. He was Cleveland’s offensive coordinator from 2001-03.

There is not enough white running backs, wr's, safety's,O-line men, d- lineman...ect ect ect....Black America wants a job based on color and is a hypocritical crock of BULL@#$%! Players get cut everyday based on performance and not color. Thanks Obama for dividing the nation with your hypocrisy and out right lies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

Arizona was 17th in points allowed and 18th in yards allowed.  Not the sort of performance that puts a DC into heavy demand for open HC vacancies.

Horton can get over himself. Arians led the Colts to the playoffs this year while filling in as interim HC. After the debacle in Glendale this year I'm completely stupefied that any coach from the Cardinals organization got any consideration, much less hired, for a HC position. Arians is a winner.

Todd Bowles?!? are you kidding me?  he stunk up the Link with the Eaglets and he gets another DC job?  What a joke

So Horton was sitting back thinking the GM was obligated to make him coach?

What did he do as OC that compares to what Arians did with the Colts as interim Head Coach?

Cards made the right decision. No even debatable by Horton.

Obviously the Cardinals made the right decision to pass on him being he couldn't be professional about not being hired! If this is the way he behaves after being let down, then why hire him? Even if he felt he had some right to the position, the GM and Owner have the right to do what they want! Why would they want a CRY BABY that throws FITS when he doesn't get his way. He makes good Black Coaches in the sport look bad. If Black people want to change this discouraging trend, then they all must be responsible when holding an important post such as Defensive Coordinator in the NFL. There are so many qualified Black Coaches and Coordinator's out there that this shouldn't be an issue in this day and age but it is. And that's why it's so important not to have public relation problems, problem's the law or anything they can hold against you!. You have to be squeeky clean like Lovie Smith or Herman Edwards to get a Head Coaching job in all Professional Sports. It's a shame that a mistake can be held against you, but that's what they do. There's a couple really good Black coach in Green Bay that should be a Head Coach because they're both talented coaches, just like they were both very  talented players! Darrin Perry has done a great job coaching the Safety's and he hasn't even been pursued for a Coordinator's position much less HC. And even more deserving than him is Winston Moss who's been Assistant Head Coach for like 3 season's now! He's been passed over for years and should of been a Head Coach 8 years ago. So way to go Ray Horton! You did nothing with your rant other than probably costing a really good Black Coach his promotion with your rant!

screw the Rooney rule. Horton isn't smart enough to an NFL head coach.

Riddle me this.  How can anyone justify hiring an assitant coach from a team who lost 11 games this season?  Say what you want about the QB and the offense, but the defense didn't do to well.

As a Browns fan I am absolutely pumped that Ray Horton is going to be our defensive coordinator.

I know he is angry. But throwing a hissy fit is not a good way to get future interviews. Deserving candidates get passed over all the time in the NFL.

Defense is the only thing going for Cardinals and now Horton is gone. I am sure Horton would find a new gig soon. Maybe Bears should pick him up.

Way to set yourself up for a future HC job, Horton. Act like a crybaby when you're not given the position. Shows superb leadership material.

steve you made a very bad decsion don't let arians take ray away when we had a defense that keep us competing even when we had no offensive production. if i was you i would go apologize to ray and make him head coach right now. i dont want a coach that doesnt want ray to be the dc

 @craig.w.bryant

 Horton probably blew his next chance as a HC....isn't he the same guy who wore dog collars as a "look at me" self-promo when he was a player? Sounds like another self-assorbed ahole...

 @beast He was the DC, not the OC... and that Cards defense was pretty respectable only allowing 5.2 Yards per Play (good for 12th in the league) I'm not saying he should have got the Job over Arians, I would take Arians in this situation in a heartbeat as well, but Horton did a pretty darn good job considering the eggs constantly laid by the offense at their feet.

 @CZForce I think Ray Horton only screwed it up for Ray Horton.

 @Sulkaman wait until the end of the 13 season and we shall see if you still bees pumped.

Maybe you should read the story more carefully. It is Horton who is pissed at the GM and doesn't want to stay, or the GM who doesn't want an employee screaming at him in public. Arians has nothing to do with this. But Todd Bowles replacing Horton? He sucked at Philly...went 1-9 after he replaced the previous DC. Too bad Horton didn't want to stay on as DC.

CZForce
CZForce

 @touseyd How's that? You obviously don't comprehend what you read do you? All I said was it makes me sick that Black coaches don't get the same opportunities as others! My Wife is Black so you can take you ridiculous accusations and get a life loser! What's discomforting here are Holier than thou  people like you who try use they're lack of perception to try to insult others who are making a fair and just point! It's people like you that make white people look bad! Your a JERK!

 @thinkmoremedia  @joeshine730 He actually put two sentences together.  In a row.  But I had to one-up both of you and make it 4 sentences.  Guess I should be a GM somewhere.

 @MichaelWallis1  How is it a "problem"?  There is a vast difference between ensuring an equal opportunity and mandating a certain outcome.

 @JackWilliams  @Rocket Dog No the article clearly suggest that he was going to be fired regardless so that Arians could have his way with a clean slate and his guy. He is better off somewhere else. Only Kurt Warner cold fix the Cardinals and he is retired.

pandah462
pandah462

 @JackWilliams  There is nothing in this story indicating that Horton didn't want the DC gig after getting passed over.  It says above he's being fired for the Eagles chump to take the job.  Maybe you should read the story more carefully.

Arians hasn't been paying attention. The ownership is the problem. They have been riding on the shoulders of the rest of the NFL since they left Chicago. They will, through the ineptness of the owner, degrade the performance of the team in unknown/ indescribeable ways to eternity. It's all about the $$$. They stumbled onto Kurt by accident and have been riding that dead horse ever since. How Fitz can keep a smiling face is beyond me.

 @CZForce     Your a loser and a coward and un American. Be all you can be not all you can be in with special treatments because of color. Your views are racist, so go put your obama hat on and pretend. In another three yrs when all the costs of his programs cripple the economy and asswipes like you DEMAND things that others have to work for and earn this whole house of cards will fall and hard at that.

 @David2  @MichaelWallis1

David2 - excellent point.  Diversity for diversity shake is hardly a worthwhile goal. In fact, it illustrates the end of a civilization.  Merit and connection to those who are responsible for making the hiring decision should be the sole criteria for landing a job. This regime that uses social obloquy and /or the force of the state to benefit certain segments of the population has got to end.

bklyn
bklyn

 @David2  @MichaelWallis1 True, but a lack of diversity in the HC positions can still be seen as a "problem" even when we can't mandate outcomes some would find to be acceptable.

 I can't help the fact that you are not well read and base everything you know on one article. And this is the wrong site to be using personal attacks against anyone who doesn't agree with your limited knowledge.

RobertM
RobertM

 @JackWilliams I am commenting on your idiocy relative to this article...the one above you freakin idiot. This article is stating that he "will be fired and replaced...". You tried to bring in things that were not in this article, the one above, and also got the article wrong via the actual details of the actual article above. You started out saying someone needed to read the article more clearly.

You are simply an idiot as YOU got the article wrong and then added things that were not even in it to make your inaccurate and wrong points..

JackWilliams
JackWilliams

 @RobertM

Now who is the idiot. Horton has not been fired though I am sure that he would like to be fired so he can get paid to get outta Dodge. He is still on staff and given permission to seek employment elsewhere. The Rams are likely his destination. BTW, there are at least three different sources about the furious argument between Horton and the GM.

RobertM
RobertM

 @JackWilliams  @pandah462 You are officially an idiot. Heated does not have to be about volume. It could be word choice or tone or anything else that was never mentioned in the article just like the fact that no other employees were mentioned.

JackWilliams
JackWilliams

 @pandah462

Excuse me, but did you read the article? Horton was screaming at the GM ( within earshot of other employees) for being passed over. This is not done by someone who wants to keep his job in a transitional front office. He obviously didn't want to keep his job - he wanted to be fired so he could collect his salary for 2013. If he quits, he gets nothing.
