Rams reportedly hire fired Cowboys DC Rob Ryan

It took a quite a bit longer than “five minutes,” but fired Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has been hired by the Rams, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post via Twitter.

Ryan was fired Wednesday after his Cowboys defense finished 19th overall, 17th against the run and 21st against the pass, while missing five starters due to injuries and two backups who had become starters.

Ryan, the brother of Jets head coach Rex Ryan and son of former Bears defensive coordinator and Eagles head coach Buddy Ryan, was surprised by the firing.

“I inherited a team that was 31st in the league in defense and made them better,” Ryan told’s Tim MacMahon. “I (expletive) made them a hell of a lot better. I’ll be out of work for like five minutes.”

“I think I did a good job and I think our staff did a good job on defense trying to compete with what we had at the end of the year,” Ryan told MacMahon. “But the best job we did was when we were able to coach our starters.”

Cowboys officials reportedly had been leaning toward firing Ryan long before he managed to patch the team’s injury riddled defense during a late unsuccessful bid to make the playoffs. Cowboys executives thought Ryan focused too much on his scheme, at the expense of forcing turnovers and fundamentals such as tackling. The 2012 Cowboys forced a franchise-low 16 turnovers, the league’s fourth-worst total, and a league-low seven interceptions.

The Rams were looking for a new defensive coordinator after the team fired Gregg Williams who remains indefinitely suspended for his role in the Saints bounty scandal.

Great that it didn't take him long to find a new job. The Rams have the coach and the talent to be a playoff team, and Ryan will make that defense even better. They have a lot of talent on that side of the ball. Jerry Jones is an idiotic jackwagon for making Ryan the scapegoat. Defense wasn't the problem there.

Ryan needs some grooming lessons and aggo bath and a hair cut. Kids see this fat slob standing there like some unwashed bum.

I think it took more than five minutes because Ryan was weighing offers. The author of this story is a bit of a squirrel. I am not a fan of Jerry Jones and his current version of the Cowboys, but to lay blame of Ryan and his defense was insane. That guy was reduced to using cab drivers in the last month of the season.

Good for him. Again, Jerry Jones places the blame on the wrong person. He should have simply hired an OC. Rob's defense suffered from a lack of offense. had to play too many plays...

What  great way to end the season----piss poor effort by the players---who to me, are to interested in their reps as far as trying to like movies stars outside the field----getting in trouble with "THE LAW" and just plain dont have the old Cowboy spirit to win games and super bowls and then the best of the best----this A-hole Jones hires a proven quiter in Kiffin----he has never been a great DC----he has some good numbers here and there---but Jones could have atleast hired someone that can run with a team during pratice----I gave up on the boys a long time ago----this Cowboys team will not get back to the glory days untill Jones is all but out of the picture as far as the Cowboys go---he is the #1 reason for the teams losing ways---and yes the movie star wanna bee players are to blame to----but a little pc of me will keep my fingers crossed for them----again thow---Kiffin sucks----his son Lane is a waste (how bout that hope and change USC___lol)----typical Kiffin---when the tough gets tough---they run away like they did when they were coaches for the VOLS up at Tennessee in Knoxville...

I have been a rams fan my whole life but may not be able to watch another game. The Ryans are over rated media hogs
