Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun announced that he will play for Team U.S.A. in this year’s World Baseball Classic, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

“I actually started my baseball activities a little bit earlier than I usually do because I’m going to play in the World Baseball Classic this year,” Braun said in an interview with SportsRadio WSSP 1250. “So, I have to get myself prepared a little sooner, a little quicker than I usually do.”

Braun also played in the last tournament in 2009. He hit .381 in six games. The U.S. lost in the semifinals to Japan, who went on the win the championship.

The World Baseball Classic will begin in March. Team U.S.A.’s first-round matchup will be held at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Great!  A confirmed drug cheat representing the USA.

Why does this still exist?  The players who participate in this usually do really poorly in the first half of the season since they're missing Spring Training for what is essentially exhibition games, it doesn't do much in terms of scouting players from other countries, since most of them are usually guys who have already washed out of the majors (or are part of a communist country that we don't do any sort business with), and some of these games can get to be pretty bad.
