Free-agent Lance Berkman and the Texas Rangers agreed to a one-year deal Saturday, reports MLB.com.

The deal also comes with a vesting option for 2014 and Berkman will receive a $10 million salary plus a $1 million buyout this season.

Berkman, 36, had two surgeries on his right knee last season, forcing him to play only 32 games with the St. Louis Cardinals. Berkman hit .259 in 81 at-bats with two homers and seven RBIs.

“In a way they have to buy me out of retirement, and I know that sounds crass — I wish it didn’t — but it’s a big commitment, it can put a strain on the family,” Berkman said last week. “If I’m going to play, I’m going to give my heart and soul to the team. But if the carrot’s not big enough, the mule isn’t going to want to go.”

The Rangers would likely put Berkman in the designated hitter spot.  In 13 MLB seasons, Berkman is a career .290 hitter with 360 home runs and 1,200 RBI.

I am sorry Lance could not have finished his career as a St Louis Cardinal. He is a class act all around - an inspiration to the younger players and a player fans can look up to. He killed us when he was with Houston and was one of the "Killer B's" but we embraced him when he came to St Louis. Good Luck Lance - we wish you well !

why do we want to go after this old guy who warned us only a year or so ago that he did not want to come here and that we would be wasting a trade when we had a need for him?  and the quotes he gave claiming hardships on the family that necessitated millions of $.  man, go live in an average neighborhood and see what hardships really are.  i'm a rangers fan but will never understand WHY?

@brian6 I agree that the Rangers overspent but, why do people think that just because a person is a millionaire that they or their family has it easy (or easier)?Does life suddenly become easy for his four daughters just because daddy has money? Is money all that is necessary nowadays to ensure one's children and wife are happy? There are a lot of people who live in average neighbourhoods who experience a plethora of hardships that would not trade what they have with millionaires. Moreover, hardships are subjective by nature. What you might consider a hardship, others may not, and vice versa.

@SeanAtkinson i agree with most of what you say.  however, considering the wording he used, the way he turned his nose up to us when we were thinking about trading for him, and the economy as it is, i, personally, would rather him not be on the team i root for.  money appears to be the one thing that makes him tick, so yes, it is THE factor for him.  are your his dad or his son?

Nice comment Lance...." But if the carrot’s not big enough, the mule isn’t going to want to go.... it can put a strain on the family......" I guess $11 million was your price to pull you away from your family.

Before you make such a "crass" comment next time, think about the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines that are half way around the world protecting your entitled attitude--far from their spouses and kids--getting shot at--all while they are making are making $20K-$40K a year. Yeah it sounded real crass, which is why Rangers should have paid a class act like Mike Young whatever he wanted and avoid Lance Berkman's elite-st attitude.

@quickdraw Not much of a comparison. He's not claiming to be saving lives. He simply said he would retire if the money's not right. Sorry but I don't see the problem there. My dad said the same thing a decade ago....for his job and he wasn't making near that kinda money. You liberal idiots like to bash the rich because....OMG....they like making money. Stay home and be broke if you want. The rest of us prefer to be able to afford things we want.

@Mel@quickdraw

Mel -  im liberal and agree with you on everything but the liberal bashing. Grouping all liberals together as uninformed, anti-free market idiots shows a lack of intellegence on your part.

Quickdraw - that military argument is ridiculous and completely irrelevant. If they want to make 11 million dollars a year instead of 20k they should have spent their time acquiring sought after skills instead of signing up for the army.

@Mel   Yes it does. I know lots of conservatives who are intelligent and rational people.

@ChickenWolf  @quickdraw I'll agree with you. Do want to ask though, do liberals bashing all conservatives as gun toting rednecks bother you as well?

@Mel  @quickdraw What the hell does being liberal have to do with it? I'm a liberal, and I scrolled down to the comments section just to say that I liked how honest and up-front Berkman was about the whole issue, and how I completely see where he is coming from. Then I see some moron like you breaking things down into political terms. Idiot.

@Mel  @billhicks  @quickdraw Let's just all hope Americans see the light and realize that the agendas of politicians do NOT match the average Americans.  They are raking us over the coals and SERVE SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS.  WAKE UP!!!

@billhicks  @Mel  @quickdraw True but why do you have to bring the military into it, they volunteered knowing full well they might have to go into battle and Berkman didn't (just as I didn't) ask our government to "protect us" against whomever it/you think is the enemy.  Someone somewhere is making a HECK OF A LOT MORE MONEY on those two very expensive wars than Berkman.  And no, I'm not a liberal, well, guess it depends on the topic.  You shouldn't be so apt to put people into one of two categories.

Great player if he is over his injuries. I guess the deal is OK. It just boggles the mind how teams throw millions around, then charge me $10 for a warm, flat beer.

@SuperDave The reason that they have millions to throw around is because guys like you  are willing to pay 10 bucks for a beer.
