The Mariners signed first baseman Mike Jacobs to a minor league deal including an invitation to spring training, reports MLB.com’s Greg Johns. Jacobs, 32, played in the majors for seven years and is a career .253/.313/.473 hitter. He has spent the majority of the past three years in the minors.

Jacobs will have some stiff competition in making the major league roster at first:

This seems mostly a move for organizational depth as the Mariners are pretty loaded with first base candidates at the moment with Justin Smoak, Kendrys Morales, Mike Carp and even Raul Ibanez now slated into that mix.

But Jacobs is a guy with some left-handed pop and Major League experience, so they’ll give him a look this spring.
