Report: Arizona Cardinals ‘very close’ to hiring Andy Reid as head coach

The Arizona Cardinals are “very close” to a deal with ex-Eagles coach Andy Reid to make him the team’s next head coach, Tim Ring of KTVK-TV in Arizona is reporting.
Both Reid and Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt were fired on Monday. Reid went 129-88-1 in 14 seasons in Philadelphia, leading the Eagles to five NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl, while Whisenhunt compiled a 45-51 record in six seasons and also led the Cardinals to a Super Bowl loss.
Both teams lost 11 of their last 12 games this season, with the Eagles finishing at 4-12 and the Cardinals at 5-11.

The move would reunite Reid with quarterback Kevin Kolb, who he drafted in the second round in 2007 before trading him in 2011. Kolb has struggled in his two seasons in Arizona, playing just 15 games due to benchings and injuries.
According to Kenny Roda of ESPN 850 in Cleveland, Reid could also reunite with Tom Heckert, who served several roles in the Eagles front office from 2001-09 before becoming the Browns’ general manager in 2010. Heckert was also fired on Monday.
The Cardinals are reportedly interviewing defensive coordinator Ray Horton for the position today, according to ProFootballTalk:
The Cardinals are believed to be interviewing their own defensive coordinator, Ray Horton, today. Horton is a minority, so that interview would satisfy the requirements of the Rooney Rule and leave the Cardinals free to make their hire. If they’re only interviewing Horton for that reason, then the Cardinals are violating the spirit of the Rooney Rule, but they wouldn’t be violating the letter of the rule and would therefore be in the clear with the league office.
A league source told ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter that the Reid-to-the-Cardinals move has a 95 percent chance of happening:
One league source said he was "95 percent" certain former Eagles HC Andy Reid will wind up coaching the Cardinals.—

LikeWhat's wrong with coaching the Bears Reid? Tooo cold? OR, do you have a "GUT" feeling about a downward spiral for the Bears? You need to rub the belly, and make sure the "Buddha" is making the right choice in picking a team that's closest to getting to the SB.....NOT that I care as a Packer fan.

LikeBidwells manage to screw things up just like they have done with their last three coaches. They hire a big name coach and give him total personnel authority. Then when things start to go bad, they look to the GM to pull their chestnuts out of the fire, but he can't fire anyone, only a Bidwell can do that. Rod Graves did the best he could, but he was stymied every time by a headstrong Head Coach and an owner who couldn't pull the trigger until it was far too late, then they fire the GM for not doing a job that wasn't his.
My rationale for my conclusions; I know Graves personally. He knew they needed a new coach two years ago, but couldn't fire him because the owners didn't want to pay the remainder of the salary. Secondly, Any body who knows Andy Reid knows that he won't sign a deal where he doesn't have total control. That's why he is being hired first. The new GM will be an adviser only.

LikeJack Williams - Well, Fisher and Harbaugh will. Reid is now an older coach looking for a fat paycheck. The Cardinals are just the doormat, I mean team for that. Look for Reid's time in AZ to be short lived, and look for the Cardinals to be last place every year Reid is their HC.

LikeHarbaugh, Fisher, and Reid will provide plenty of competition for Carroll. His rep as a genius up in Seattle will be short lived. The NFC West will be a scrum for the next decade.

LikeKeep in mind that the Cardinals were also duped into (and overpaying for) Eagles QB Kevin Kolb. How well has that trade worked out for the Arizona Cardinals? The usual - not good.

LikeOh, excellent, because it worked out so well the last time the Cardinals hired a fired Eagles' Head Coach.
You got a winner in town.
Or did he say:
You gotta roll the windows down.
You got a Winn Dixie in town?
Who the hell knows what Buddy Ryan was saying, or how badly he failed as the Cardinals' Head Coach, or how Reid will do the exact same thing. Re-tread NFL coaches - not good. Energetic college coaches from winning programs - good. The Cardinals should be going after Chip Kelly, but of course the HC spot in Philadelphia just opened, and Kelly will be getting that job. (And will be more successful in Philadelphia than Reid will be in Arizona).

LikeJohn4 When you write that retread NFL coaches are not a good idea, are you referring to retreads like Tom Coughlin, Bill Belichick, John Fox, Mike Shanahan, and Pete Carroll?

LikeGlad Andy Reid was able to get back on his feet 1 day after being laid off. That being said, Im not sure if he should jump back into coaching. Seems like he should take a year off to spend with his family and mourn the death of his son. Losing a child cant be easy and Its obvious he didnt have his mind 100% on the job which is what you must do to be a HC in the NFL. Hopefully this season will be better for him but me being a Niner Fan, I can only wish mediocrity to the Arizona Cardinals.. GO NINERS!

LikeGood for Andy. No unemployment checks for him. As for 'violating the spirit of the Rooney Rule', Im afraid it happens all the time. I've heard coaches say that just going through the interview process is valuable, but it's clear that owners usually know who they want to hire and are frequently just going through the motions interviewing minority candidates.

LikeDonZski Don - with all due respect, I think you have left "Arizona" out of the equation. A cursed franchise, and a "proven" coach who couldn't close the deal in Philly. Arizona will be a sub .500 team with him.

LikeDonZski Don - Yes, no disrespect to you at all. Just that Arizona is the worst part of NFL careers. Very little success, and frequent change and losses. Ken Whisenhunt was able to get the Cardinals to the Super Bowl (agreed - he had Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald, and Anquan Bolden) but still. Cardinals to the Super Bowl. Is there ANY reason in the world, (considering the Cardinals issues at QB, RB, TE, OL, and Secondary), that Reid can make this team a winner? The futile history of the Arizona Cardinals says no.
BTW - Kurt Warner - at his peak - was one of the best QBs in the history of the NFL. His throws were sensational. Excellent with the Rams, got injured (throwing hand), was released, went to the Giants who went with Eli Manning as their starter (a good decision) then came to Arizona. Warner quickly dispatched Matt Leinart, and took the Cardinals to the Super Bowl. Reid's choice of QB is nowhere near the same class as Kurt Warner.

LikeDonZski Don, the best way for Reid to use Arizona in this case is as leverage. There are 7 NFL HC openings, and Reid will be a front runner for at least three of them, and a front runner for 2-3 more. Why not use Arizona for leverage and sign where there is a possibility of success?
(Or else, it's just that "golden parachute" thing)!
