It looks like “Black Monday” has its first two casualties as Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner will clean house within the struggling franchise.

Browns head coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert are expected to be let go by the team after the Browns complete their season Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer

Shurmur has a 9-22 record with the team since taking over in 2011, after Eric Mangini was fired. Cleveland is 5-10 this season and have not made the playoffs since 2002. The team will be looking for their sixth head coach since the NFL returned to the city in 1999.

“Listen, I get this, and my concerns are for my team and making sure that we do all the right things during the game to give our guys the best chance to win,” Shurmur said. “That’s where I’m at. We have not won enough football games, and I know that’s the way this things works, but in our situation I see improvement and I’ll leave it at that.”

According to the report, some of the coaches being looked at to replace Shurmur are Oregon head coach Chip Kelly and several NFL offensive coordinators to include the New England Patriots’ Josh McDaniels, the San Francisco 49ers’ Greg Roman and the Indianapolis Colts’ Bruce Arians.

Josh McDaniels???!!!!???? He has to be the worst head coach choice on planet earth. He is death. He totally destroyed the Broncos, running off a decent QB (as well as a host of other quality players) and replacing him with at best a 2nd string QB (Orton) and then his personal pet project Tebow (who really isn't an NFL QB at all). The results at his next job were equally awful as they were in Denver. Do yourself a favor and save yourself two or three years of disappointment, leave Josh where he belongs, in NE where Brady can cover for him.

no big deal---the browns will fire this incompetent group and hire another group of failed nfl retreads from other teams---it never changes in this league, which is why most teams suck every year--they all do the same thing, run the same offense, same defense, drat the same type of players.....

I really don't get this whole GM-Coach "package deal" thing that seems to be the flavor in Cleveland this time around. I agree that Shurmer is not the guy to turn the corner with this franchise. But in just two seasons Heckert has made incredible improvements with the personnel mess that Mangini left behind. His drafts, overall, have been very good. If there was any room for improvement, it would have been aggressively pursuing quality FA's in the offseason. The Browns have been way under the salary cap while recording a nice franchise profit with Lerner controlling the purse strings all these seasons. Maybe if they had opened up their wallets a little wider they could have filled some of those gaps earlier. Hopefully with new owner Haslam he'll understand you don't have to treat the organization like a corporation and look at profit margins to render a vote of success. This isn't San Diego or Jacksonville. Cleveland is a football-frenzied town. He can pay for quality, proven talent up front reap the rewards of a championship caliber team for seasons to come.

Browns fans first I am sorry you have to go through this. Second I want to say keep your heads up. Your new owner use to own part of the Steelers and has seen first hand how to build a great franchise. I am a cubs fan so I know how you are feeling. It isn't going to be easy but if this new owner does things the righht way you should see a competent team. This team is closer then a few people think. Good defense and some key young offensive guys that you can build around.

Some of the coaches "being looked at"  include Josh McDaniels?

That's a joke right?

Do they not remember the mess this @ss clown made in Denver?

What a joke of a franchise. Just can't create any stability in Cleveland. Who's the owner this year? Beats me.

New GM, new coaching staff, new systems to learn, get rid of these guys -- they won't fit in your system. How about a 4-12 season in 2013?

At this point does Cleveland realize it's not the coaches? It's a combination of lack of talent, poor front office decisions and a plethora of other mistakes. No coach is coming in and going to win. Six head coaches in 13 years. The front office should just give out 2.3 year contracts, since it's the average length someone is around. Change the culture from head to toe, which is the only way Cleveland will win and keep a coach.

I have been a die-hard Browns fan my whole life and now at age 56 I am wondering if I will ever see a Super Bowl with the Browns in it.  I am not against shaking things up yet again as what looked like solid improvement did not stand the test against quality playoff teams (Washington and Denver).  They have improved the overall team talent but still have too many large holes to continue with Shurmur as head coach.  He simply does not have what it takes.  It simply showed that the Browns cannot be competitive against playoff calbier teams.  The frustration continues.

Isn't Sam Rutigliano available?  What about Forest Gregg?  Bud Carson anyone?  As for QB, Brian Sipe? Mike Phipps?  What do you say to Milt Plum?  Mark Miller?

@juan.triumph1  Remember the mess of things that Bill Belichick made of things in his first coaching stop - in Cleveland?  He turned out alright.

@Wally1i Do you remember when the Browns beat the (Baltimore) Colts in the 1964 championship game? 27-0!  I was 12 (four years up on you) and as a Colts fan I still am annoyed about it. But you haven't had much since then. New team, new owners, new everything. It's crazy. Even Bill Belichick couldn't win there. I'm not giving you the business, I just don't understand it. I (kind of ) follow the Washington Wizards and they are about as bad as you can get and CAN'T get better.  Sports will make you nuts. Good luck with your new hires.

I kinda like that last line. 'Rebuilding since 1999.' You should mention that to the owner. He could put it on a t-shirt in the pro shop.

@JoeCabot  @juan.triumph1 therefore, if you "make a mess" in your first job, you will win multiple super bowls in job 2??  funny stuff--hire josh, lose more games.

@Anaximenes1  No guarantee that a coach wins Super Bowls at stop number two.  Just like there are no guarantees that a coach who was bad in one place will be bad in another.  Some learn & grow and become winners.  Some don't.   You can yell and scream about Josh McDaniel all you'd like, but only time will tell if he becomes a good coach.  Your belief that he won't win in nothing but a guess.
