Report: Rex Ryan prefers firing if Jets owner won’t spend on offensive changes
Jets coach Rex Ryan would welcome being fired if owner Woody Johnson will not commit to paying for a remodeled offense in 2013, according to a New York Daily News report.
Sources told The Daily News that Ryan has intimated to “anyone who will listen” that he would prefer being fired if Johnson will not invest in offensive roster changes and most likely replacing offensive coordinator Tony Sparano with a new play-caller.
The Daily News reported that the team has not guaranteed Ryan’s return internally with one game left and the Jets a disappointing 6-9. Sparano has been linked to rumors of his firing amidst the Jets’ offensive woes. Both decisions could boil down to whether or not Johnson wants to eat those contracts, while spending more for new coaches. If Johnson fires Ryan, he will owe him two years and more than $6 million on his remaining contract.
“If Woody’s not willing to do what it takes to fix the team, then (Ryan) knows he’s better off being fired,” a team source said. “If Woody is willing to eat some money and spend to get us out of this mess, then it’s worth staying.”
“The million-dollar question is how much dead money is Woody willing to absorb for 2013 with front office, coaches and players?” a league source familiar with the situation said. “If Woody’s not willing to spend, then (Ryan) would want out. He’d be a lame duck. Anybody would want out.”
“He won’t quit,” a team official said.
looked liked he quit 10 games ago
Rex Ryan, Great DC, Lousy HC, Now he's blaming the owner for his lousy coaching and throwing his OC under the bus. What is it with the whole Ryan family, Buddy, the father was the same way. It's never their fault.
What planet is Ryan from? He screws up the team and then blames everyone including the owner for not doing enough? I'm no Tebow fan, but he has won a few football games, would it really hurt to try the guy out when your team is in the toilet anyway? I remember that whole weird foot fetish fiasco, they should'a wised up about this guy way back then.
Where is Merrill hodge on this one, he called Tebow a quitter what about his crybaby coach.. This is the guy who predicted a Super Bowl appearance with the same group... Get rid of the load mouth fat ass and send the money on a quality no nonsense coach.. And see if he can take hodge with him wherever he goes.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. I honesty think the Jets would do better with an expansion franchise next season. Just nuke the roster and front office.
They need to just get rid of the real problem and that's Mike Tannenbaum the GM who has failed to provide Rex Ryan with the tools on offense to win. The offensive line is a joke, the only good receiver, Hines Ward was out for the season early, there isn't a capable quarterback on the roster and there isn't anyone good enough to be considered a featured running back. It's a bigger mess than what the Arizona Cardinals have.
@MichaelWallis I remember watching when HBO did their show about the Jets... Woodhead is working his tail off and proving himself as a running back.. and he almost got cut. They keep him on for one year and let him go New England.... Rex doesn't know talent when it is in front of him.
@MichaelWallis Hines Ward? lmao
Rex they have spent and you did nothing with it.....
@MRMc yes they did spend money on offense, but it was towards mediocre players like Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow and malcontent Hines Ward.
Hey Woody, I just did my check flight in a cessna 182, you think maybe I can fly the team Lear Jet now?
I think Woody has bent over backwards to satisfy Rex... moved and fired every assistant and they are still losers. Rex puts his faith in a couple of players, has Woody pay out the bucks for them only to watch them flop. Hey Rex, who decided Woodhead would never amount to anything? Who was it that stuck with a QB everyone else knew was a flop? The team loses because of his poor coaching and decision making... but we can all be sure he has a better plan up there in his head.. the best offense ever.. if Woody will just pay out. When the money is paid out and the team still flops there will be another excuse.. probably overpaid players who won't listen.
@Cool I'm not a Woody Johnson partisan (and honestly, I have no idea how much he gets involved in the operations of the team) but he does seem to be stuck is a crappy situation here. The coach drives the team into the ground and then demands that the owner either spend a bundle to fix it, or fire him and pay him millions to not work work there.
This guy is an idiot. He has downgraded his team each year and now wishes to "buy" an entirely new team. He can't manage, he can't game-plan, and he can't build a cohesive team. How well did the "Dream Team" idea work out in Philly?
He should be careful what he wishes for. Not many other teams will have continuous blind faith in such a moronic coach.
With Sanchez and Tebow on the roster and Sporano coaching the offense (Miami was a juggernaut on offense when he was coach) how can he be failing? He is a loud-mouth fool but the GM is equally bad...
@DonHole Sanchez and Tebow are two of the worst QBs in the NFL so failing is easy as long as they are on the team.
@mountainbrook417 @DonHole
How can anyone grade Tebow when they never played him or gave him a chance...
Gotta love guaranteed contracts. Ryan is for all intents and purposes begging to be fired knowing he's getting paid the next two years regardless of whether he's putting in 16 hour days sucking for the Jets or sitting at home sucking on his wife's toes.
"Jets coach Rex Ryan would welcome being fired... " So would everybody else.
@UleNotknow, even Rex Ryan deserves better than having to coach this team.
WOW! In what world can you be a looser and demand more money to improve a product that you cannot manage? Looks like old Rex has lost sight of reality not to mention his shoes.
So the Jets might keep Ryan AND Sanchez for next year and expect different results? Seems unlikely to me.
@RickapolisI would keep Ryan but fire the offensive coordinator and bring in Norv Turner to run the offense once he is fired by the Chargers. The GM also needs to go.
Lying Ryan shut up. Your big mouth is a Big problem. Your the coach and you blew it!. If your so pissed off quit and forego the 2 years remaining on your contract. If he does that part of the jets problem will be solved. Lying Ryan didn't even know Holmes was benced last year. What kind of a head Coach don't know what is going on in a game?....Yep that's right Lying Ryan. If he is so confident quit and he can get a job somewhere else..maybe bagging groceries in a supermarket or perhaps shoveling Horses#$t in a stable. Your the part of the problem Lying Ryan not Woody not investing in players. Woody is guilty of hiring the wrong people to run the team.
This is between him & Belichick
The New York Jets need an anima!
Why doesn't he "eat some money" for the ridiculous job he did imitating a pro coach? He should be ashamed for making such a statement...if only he had any shame.
I would convert him to a consultant, make him show up to work in an office every day with nothing to do.. Make him go to games and watch a good coach turn this team into a winner.. Rex has blown everything this year and he wants to make Tebow the scapegoat.. Not working...
@RobLong
You should be the G.M. ...........Woody take notice !
@RobLong good comment
I wish I could get fired from my job and become a millionaire. I'd jack things up too.
He should be grateful he even has a job after the disaster he and Sparano caused. What a total jack off..
