Report: Jets to trade Mark Sanchez, pursue Michael Vick

He’s already been benched by the New York Jets, and now it appears the team may be prepared to bring the Mark Sanchez era to a complete close. The New York Daily News reports that the team will seek to trade Sanchez in the offseason, removing the possiblity of the quarterback coming back to compete for the starting job in 2013.

Adding yet another wrinkle to the story: the soon-to-be out of contract Michael Vick is one of the team’s potential replacements for Sanchez. The Daily News reports that Vick would relish the opportunity to come to New York, and quotes multiple sources within the organization saying that head coach Rex Ryan is a fan of the current Eagles signal-caller.

Sanchez has made headlines this season for taking poor care of the football in addition to all-around disappointing play. With the Jets mathematically eliminated from playoff contention last week, Ryan has named backup Greg McElroy the team’s starter for the remaining two games of the season.

Here come the dog killer posts... people give less bitterness and hate for rapists and murderes of human beings than they do for Vick

Maybe they should get rid of Ryan first?

Ryan is looking for anything that will produce what he thinks will be immediate results, thats why he should have been fired.  The Jets , whether they like it or not are in a rebuilding mode, from top to bottom ,thats why Ryan should have been fired !! ( too bad , we couldn't off load, clueless Woody Woodpecker too ) , anyways, Ryan knows this upcoming season he can't have another losing season or he is gone ( or maybe not , given clueless Woody), so , he wants Vic , when the Jets need to look for a quarterback they can build around for the future, I have been a very loyal Jets fan for years but this year is really making me think about parachuting out , and I can't believe Im thinking that way

Is anyone really surprised by the Jets actions, loser coach, loser organization, loser city, new loser QB. Maybe Vick was wearing sandles when he sat down to talk to rex ryan.

Do the Jets have an O-line? You can HAVE Vick, Jets. Eagles May even pay you to take him off their hands.

What an Overrated, Inconsistent, Injury-Prone QB

The Jets have destroyed his Trade Value, Would you want Sanchez on your Team?. I live in KC and bad as we need a QB, this would not be an upgrade to what we have now.

Vick is no better than Sanchez.... Wow, what an upgrade......GFL with that one Rex....

The smartest businessmen --- men who have made millions and billions of dollars --- act like idiots when they buy a pro sports franchise.  The Sanchez, Tebow fiasco was a miscarriage.  Now, they're going to compound their problems and double down on Michael Vick.  Go figure!

Michael Vik + Rex Ryan = Bet on the RUNBUTT2 Offense.  Rex should resign and get a job as a consultant to NFL owners who need to DEHORN way-too-popular players.

My guess is Arizona.  The latino community is huge here in Phoenix, and I think Sanchez actually will play better than he has if he does end up a Cardinal.  He will at least excite a very large portion of the fanbase.

Rex Ryan is a total buffoon, when it comes to offense. Of course he likes Vick.  He thinks that all QBs should be "joystick" Quarterbacks.   He does not think that a QB needs to get into any sort of rhythm or feel for the game.  Ryan believes that his players are just like those players in a video game and that it is up to the coaches to actually "play" the game; the players just do what the coaches command.

Bigwhazoo

all eyes are on Ryan's tattoo artist for a clue who will actually be the next QB.

What team would possibly want Sanchez with his current contract.   No way the Jets will be able to move him.  His salary is just way way out of whack.

John4

Since Vick will not restructure his $100 Million contract, the Eagles will release him.  He has virtually no trade value due to his contract.  Sanchez was a former #5 overall pick (and the Jets traded up in order to get him) and has very little trade value.  The Jets would be lucky to get anything in addition to a third round pick for him.  (Possibly a 3rd round pick and a conditional 5 to 7 pick in 2014 based on how much Sanchez plays for his new team).  The Cardinals might be interested in Sanchez, although I cannot figure out why.

If the Jets truly want Vick, and are prepared to go "all in" with him for 2013, they might trade a 5 to 7 round pick to the Eagles in order to get him to Jets camp as soon as they can.

Sanchez and Vick are two former starters (or current starters) who will be playing for new teams in 2013.  Of course the QBs who will or should have the most interest by new teams for 2013 are Alex Smith of the 49ers and Matt Flynn of the Seahawks.  Kaepernick and Wilson will be the starters there for the foreseeable future.

Now, Alex Smith has trade value, (probably a 2nd round pick) and Flynn has trade value, but less than Smith.  Flynn's trade value is less due to his contract (two years to go at approx $9 Million per year) and also because he has played less.  Figure a 3 or 4 for Flynn.  Flynn's trade value would be higher if he agrees to restructure his contract, but why would he?  The only bad thing for Flynn is if there are NO takers, and the Seahawks simply release him.  Then he becomes a free agent, and will need to negotiate a contract which will be for FAR less than his current deal.

Why is Vick the default name in talks?  Not saying the following are good, but I'd take a flyer and probably cheaper contract with Alex Smith or Matt Flyn as a stopgap until you build the OL for a future rookie QB.

Also, to those saying you can't trade Sanchez for a twinkie.  Maybe a straight up swap for another young struggling QB in Blaine Gabbert to give them both a change of scenery.  In any case, how do you fire your GM and the next roster decision you make is a terrible idea on paper?

SandbagSix

"Trade?"  Does somebody have a box of stale Twinkies they are willing to give New York in exchange for Sanchez?

I've been a jets fan since my school days, and that was a long time ago.  i've stuck with them thru some bad years and have enjoyed a few good years, even though there was only the 1 super bowl.  if michael vick joins the team i am gone.  not sure which will be my new team after all these years but 1. vick still belongs in jail  2.  vick may be the only current nfl qb capable of turning the ball over even more than sanchez.

Why even aquire Tebow then??  If your not going to use him, your just wasting good talent.

But then again,  you have to have good coverage for any QB!!

Amazed to see  how many people have the memory of a fly.  Or maybe they don't watch the games but just highlights and then pretend to know something about football.

Anyone who really watched the game these past years know that M.Vick, for all his flaws as a QB,  is a better player than Sanchez.

For the Jets at this point, getting Vick would be an improvement. Is that their best option  ? I am not sure about that.

And to the sanctimonious "holier-than-thou" bunch who rehash the dog story about Vick :

There a basic principle in civilized society : if you break the law, get caught and punished accordingly, you get to be accepted back into the fold afterwards.

Right now there is pretty much  only one exception to this rule premeditated murder who can get you life without parole or death.

there are ex-wife beater, arsonists, thieves, crooks, all around us, drug dealers,  leading normal lives after having paid for their felonies or their crimes.

If we were to forever ostracize anyboby who commited a felony or a crime, we would have an underclass of tens of thousands people left  with no practical option but to commit crimes again...

And from a religious standpointd I wont even start on how totally un-christian is this symbolic public stoning of the sinner.

@Bigwhazoo So Ryan has a tat with his wife wearing nothing but a #6 jersey ... has anyone given any thought that maybe SHE has a tat of HIM wearing nothing but a #9 jersey?? Maybe Sanchez has nothing to do with it?!

John4

@Rob F Rob - Yes, you make a lot of sense.  Sanchez earned $7.8 Million (or should I say the Jets "gave" Sanchez that money!) in 2012.   Yes, a third round pick for him might be higher than teams will want to part with.

@FP too bad you are such a spoiled fan whose life has been all to perfect that you have such an unforgiven soul. SUCKS TO BE YOU! No team would want somebody like you to cal their fan anyway. I don't see you standing on your soap box demanding that the folks that drove this country into the ground demanding that they go to jail. The idiots who padded their pockets on Wall Street, Goldman Sachs, the banks whose misdeeds have stripped so many families of the American dream with the jacked up housing crisis. So before you cast a stone in a anothers glass house check your own. Just Saying

@KerriLynnReynolds-Frome I think Rex either thought he could change Tebow's windmill throwing style, to challenge Sanchez, or just to put his team higher in the news cycles.  Tebow will never be a starting NFL QB again.  He's worse than atrocious.

@esgalan2 I'm a dog lover, but I would take Vick as a qb for the Vikes, over Ponder.  Ponder must have the lowest ball speed in the NFL.  If he throws over 20 yards, the free safety can run across the field to pick it off.  He throws like me!

@esgalan2 Preach on.  I LOVE dogs as much as anyone but I'm not gonna be casting the first stone at Michael Vick but a lot of people just won't let up.  Hopefully that won't give them a serious illness down the road...

mc501
mc501

@esgalan2 Folks like to rail on about Vick's past because it's safe.  Everyone loves dogs (animals in general) so to get on a public forum and 'verbally' stone the sinner is safe.

I applaud your courage for pointing the numerous posters' lack of the same.

Vick was found guilty and incarcerated.  People on her who want him 'tarred' or 'paralyzed' are evil themselves.  Civilized society has to understand that we all have something we're not proud of.  Oh sure, perhaps our evils are not on par with Michael Vick's, nonetheless, we want to be forgiven for our mistakes, both great and small.

Remember, there are vegetarians out there who look at you, the same way you look at Vick.

I'm a fan of Micheal Vick the football player.  Not necessarily the person.  He's the all time rushing QB leader.  He's # 95 on the NFL's all time rushing list (at any position).  If you sort all time rushers by average yards per season, he's number 149... the other 5 quarterbacks in the top 250 are in the bottom 7.  Vick has his issues, but he's a decent (arguably good) football player.

John4
John4

@Yipicya It's sort of a game of musical chairs, only with QBs and NFL teams.  If an available QB is better than your starter, then an NFL team might pursue someone new.  The 2013 draft has Geno Smith, Matt Barkely (who will be drafted in the first round), and a few other QBs likely to be drafted in the first round.  If your team cannot draft a QB (in a position the team is comfortable with) then the next option is to trade or look for free agents.

In my opinion, Matt Flynn and Alex Smith (not necessarily) has the most potential value to a new team.  Then Vick and Sanchez, and possibly a few others.  That said, if the Jets want Vick, and obtain him for 2013, then that could set a few things in motion for other teams.  (Cardinals, Chiefs, Vikings, Raiders - if they don't think Terrell Pryor is the solution, and he is not - then they might be looking for a QB, the Saints might be looking for a QB of the future, the Chargers as well, the Patriots typically draft QBs but you never know.  Any team with a lousy situation at QB, or any team with an older starter might be looking for a QB.

As for as why someone would want Sanchez, well, they might have missed out on other opportunities, and still want a serviceable QB for the short term.

 @Rocket Dog  @karmicrythym

Good call...typically USC QB's are pretty boys, playing in a soft conference, behind huge offensive linemen in a system geared for a running game.  Why so many reach the NFL is a mystery.  Why most of them are marginal players once they get there is no mystery

@N2ONELUV  @FP  Your ignorance knows no bounds. As a Jet fan for almost 40 years, I can say that in no way Jet fans are spoiled. The team is far from perfect. As a matter of fact they pretty much suck right now. Hopefully that will change for the better. We've seen a lot of ups and downs. Mostly downs.

However, I'm with FP on this: If Dog torturer/killer Vick joins the Jets, I'm gone too. I don't believe he belongs in jail as he served his time. I don't look up to athletes/celebrities as role models or idols. We're all fallible. The man had everything the common man could dream of, yet he had to take it to the next level of depravity. Would I like to see him banned from the game? Absolutely, but I know teams will deal with the devil to win, and as long as he can win he'll have a job. I just don't want a dog killer on the team I root for.

As far as the wall st. pirates that tax cheat Geitner let escape with their golden parachutes? Those guys should have been executed for their gross negligence. But just as much to blame for the housing crisis were the democrats who believed everyone should own a home if they could afford it or not. Which  contributed not only to the loss of the American "dream", but the American economy as well.

Which, BTW, has nothing to do with not wanting a dog killer on your team.

When a Bull runs rampant in theirs. Well Said! Thanks for saying it.

Vick should be thankful if he ever lands a QB job again, never mind a starting job.  Not because of his history of animal abuse, but rather because he just...well, sucks.  What possible relevancy does his placement on the all-time rushing list have?   Let him make it through a game with less than 2 fumbles...that would carry much more weight in the eyes of any future employer.
