New York Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow will request to be traded or released after the season on the assumption that Greg McElroy starts the team’s final two games, reports the New York Daily News.

McElroy will start on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers, putting Mark Sanchez on the bench. The Jets (6-8) have already been eliminated from playoff contention with Monday night’s 14-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans, in which Sanchez threw four interceptions and lost a fumble.

Sanchez is guaranteed $8.25 million for next season, making it hard for the team to release him or risk taking a huge salary cap hit. NFL.com reports that it is “highly unlikely,” that Tebow will sit idle beyond this season in the wake of the team’s decision to start McElroy.

When asked about Tebow’s plan for the future, Jets head coach Rex Ryan was less than forthcoming. Tebow’s base salary for next season is scheduled to be $2.6 million.

“I can answer this question a million ways — frontward, backward, sideways, anything else,” Ryan said. “It’s my decision and I based it on a gut feeling or whatever. Everything it comes down to is, I believe it’s the best decision for our team. That’s the only factor that goes into these decisions.”

Tebow should go to Chicago in my opinion,if he wants to actually play football.

There is no way that Ryan would play Tebow these next two games. Because what would he look like if Tebow would lead the Jets to two victories? He was covering his own tail, he wasn't thinking about the team all.

Clearance sale....who is buying......Jets are selling.

I was never a big fan of Tebow during the overhyped winning streak in Denver, but he deserves a shot for that moment and to be treated much better than the Jets treated him. The Jets as an organization is just terribly ran at the moment and it's smart for Tebow to get out while he can for a better chance.

They really did him bad.  Real bad.  I'd want out of there too.  Enough is enough.

Man, teams are going to be blowing up his agents cell phone with him being such a hot commodity and all. If I were a GM, i'd hire him to be our ball boy. That's about it. What a joke...

I'm not really a Tebow fan, or a Jets fan for that matter (go Giants!), but I think Ryan should have started Tebow for the remaining two games. At least give the beleaguered fans some entertainment, and see if any of that old "tebow magic" can make for an entertaining couple of games. Also, it's kind of a d*ck move to make Tebow your back-up QB through the entire season, and then go and start the third string guy when you bench the starter.

Reporter: Tim, how do you feel about not starting?

Tebow: It's the coach's decision but I will be ready if needed.

No issue with Rex not playing Tebow. We know what he can and can't do. Put McElroy in and let's see what he can do. Still don't believe it's all Sanchez's fault. No weapons on offense.

If coaches are always doing "what's best for the team" why do they always have to be fired? Why don't they quit for the good of the team? Rex?

Ryan never wanted Tebow, it was the owner who wanted him. Ryan did everything in his power to set Tebow to fail.Yet Tebow did everything that Ryan asked him to do.

I don't understand why Rex Ryan would even trade for him if he had no intention of ever playing him? And I don't mean the senseless 56 plays that Tebow has run this year. The substitutions that put Tebow in the game were made at the worst possible times and made no sense unless Ryan was wanting to make sure he looked bad. They also weren't fair to Sanchez. Last night Sanchez was getting a little rhythm going with two decent completions and Ryan replaces him with Tebow? By Rex Ryan's actions both Sanchez and Tebow are in very real danger of being completely irrelevant as football players. Not sure either one deserves that. And this latest comment that he can answer that question a million different ways. How about answering the question honestly or are you not capable of that? Ryan needs to lose his job for being a very poor manager of people.

he should just retire in the philippines and continue his circumcision experiments.

I'm not saying Tebow is good enough to ever be called a decent QB, but if he has any chance of making this position a career, he needs to go to Jacksonville and make them a .500 team next season. He is the type that needs a whole fan base to believe in him and that fan base needs to have low expectations going into next season. This is a perfect fit; they get their hometown gator and a better QB. I think Tebow feeds off support and energy. The Jets organization are nothing more than a negative nancy carnival show….

Tebow was a huge hit in Denver.  A lot of people were sad when Denver dumped him.  The people were unhappy because Tebow is such a competitor and (seemingly) a good guy.  I hope he does get a chance to start for a team.  Maybe success will follow, maybe not.  But he has heart, some smarts and the drive to offer a team.  There are many teams out there who have had crummy seasons, so why not try with tebow?

Ryan,

I'm not sure what you know about the human condition...What you did to Tim Tebow was destroy him...You need to move on.

Tim Tebow is way too good for the Jets. He deserves a shot at being a starting quarterback for a new NFL team. He will come through all of this with his integrity, honesty, and loyalty. I don't think a lot of others involved will be able to feel that deep down inside where it counts.

Good move, TT. The Jets don't deserve you.

Jags would be a great fit for him...they need a QB...Maybe the Chiefs...

@bsteng1 yeah, the Steelers were laughing last year after HE knocked them out of the playoffs.. maybe you could just go back downstairs to your mom's basement and go back to bed. Society is happening up here and youre degrading the overall gene pool with your STUP1DiTY

RobLong

@DonHole I have no problem with that. Tim is a winner and a leader and he should have been the starter after about the 6th game. Sanchez is a FAILURE and the Jets are STUCK with him. Good, they deserve HIM.. Tebow is a class act and deserves a shot to play with a good organization not the jokes called the JETS.

davenbillie

@Reggielegendary yes, sanchez will be hot with another team . . wish the bucs had him . . but i believe tebow can be hot, too . . especially if he had all the chances sanchez had on that team . .

@JoeyBagadoughnutz Lets put Tebow and you in a room together and ask everyone that sees you to vote on which one is a jerk... You win by 100%

@the beast His love/loyalty to Sanchez has pretty much ruined him too.

@GarySchneider Integrity, Honesty, and Loyalty aren't what wins football games.  Heck, they don't even complete passes.  And neither does Tebow.  That's why he's not starting.

RobLong

@ShawnHendrick Jags for sure, he would sell tons of jerseys and he would be loved and respected in that area. I just want to see him win. Put in in AZ, i think he wins.. When Peyton takes that career ending hit, Denver may want him back, at least they should.

@bruno.strange  @cbbip 1 shot, Peyton goes down and Denver is back to square 1.. Tebow is loved in Denver and always will be. He was a class guy and a great competitor that loved his community.

@dt  @GarySchneider Integrity, Honesty, and Loyalty are far more important than anything that happens on the football field.  Tebow knows this, unfortunately Rex Ryan and the rest of that awful organization have no clue, and it's going to cost them their jobs.

@dt  @GarySchneider tell it like it is dt. hey it's great that Tebow has integrity and is loyal. The bottom line is the dude can't play.

@dt  @GarySchneider tebow did get a raw deal in denver.  i lost a lot of respect for elway being so disloyal.

that said though, tebow will never be a peyton manning

Yes David, thank you for sharing plain factual information with us.

Peyton has already taken his fair share of shots this season. He has always bounced right back up. Before the neck surgeries he had never missed a game and was on track to break Favre's iron man record. He was cleared by the best in the business to resume his playing career. What more do you need? I loved watching Tebow last year and what he did for my 1-4 lost, hopeless team's season, but Manning is Manning.

RobLong
RobLong

@JohnWade  @dt  @GarySchneider He beat Pittsburgh in the playoffs when Denver was supposed to have no shot.. he threw the ball DEEP successfully.. He is a football player that WINS, so that IS the bottom line.

yeah_right
yeah_right

@JohnWade  @dt  @GarySchneider again...the easy answer, how many current NFL starters have won a playoff game?  8.  That means in Tebow's 2/3 of a season as a starter he was able to lead a team to more playoff victories than 24 current NFL starters...but that is irrelevant.

Orange Crush
Orange Crush

I guess he will just have to deal with the respect of his team, coaches, owners, peers around the league and knowledgeable fans who realize that he was instrumental in bringing in a legendary QB who gives them a good shot at winning a SB in the near future. He did what you are supposed to do, which is make your t eam better.

@JimWoodward  @dt  @GarySchneider The problem Elway had was Tebow was never his boy. He was Josh McDaniels pick, so when McDaniels was out of the picture Elway was left with him. Elway is an old school, cement shoes QB, so a guy like Tebow never quite meshed with his philosophy. The fact he took such a gamble on Manning(which in the short term looks to have paid off) just shows how desperate he was to reshape the organization to his vision and not McDaniels.

bruno.strange
bruno.strange

@JimWoodward  @dt  @GarySchneider I disagree, Jim. Elway's responsibility is to the success of his football team. An elite QB versus a swell guy who can't pass isn't much of a choice.
