Nick Saban could be the Cleveland Browns’ next head coach if new owner Jimmy Haslam hires the right general manager, according to a Boston Globe report.

There have been a lot of rumors around the Browns that NFL Network analyst Michael Lombardi could be the next general manager should new team president Joe Banner and owner Jimmy Haslam decide to make a switch after the season.

According to two NFL sources, there is indeed fire behind that smoke.

Lombardi would bring more than just an NFL resume that includes a term as Raiders GM under then owner Al Davis, and front-office positions with the Browns and Broncos.

There’s also the person Lombardi could deliver as head coach: Alabama’s Nick Saban.

According to the NFL sources, Saban has let it be known that if he returns to the NFL — where he flopped, going 15-17 with the Dolphins from 2005-06 — it would likely be with Lombardi playing Scott Pioli to his Bill Belichick.

Saban reportedly regretted accepting the Dolphins job and hiring general manager Randy Mueller, who was not a disciple of Belichick’s approach to acquiring and managing personnel. Saban left the NFL to take the Alabama job in 2007.

Mueller, who was a good personnel man when running his own ship with the Saints, had to learn Saban’s system on the fly, and it never really clicked.

Saban first got a taste of Belichick’s methods in the early-90′s as the Browns defensive coordinator. Lombardi was the team’s Director of Player Personnel.

Haslam’s role as an influential University of Tennessee booster, could come into play if he’s able to lure Saban away from SEC rival Alabama.

YUUUUUUCH. Mike " mediocre competence" Lombardi and Nick..the NFL flop Saban ???? We're finally headed in a good direction. Here's hoping Haslam and Banner have enough savvy not to blow up what's beginning to produce exciting results.

Why is there not an author? B/c This is such yellow journalism that it isn't a story. It's a joke what people call reporting nowadays.

If we hire another twig from the Belichick tree I may considering hanging up my brown and orange until he's gone.  Seriously, we tried Mangini, we tried Crennel, and hell we had Belichick himself and now there's talk of another "do your job" clone?  Yeah, awesome cuz it'll be totally different this time.

@MartinJFruge; you idiot. What else could Coach Saban do at the U of A? Clowns, clowns, how many NC's does your school(Podunk U) have? Coach Saban has given us 2 and maybe 3 pretty soon. As far as him being a real coach, I repeat, he has  NC's @ Bama and one at LSWho! Pretty good for a shoddy coach wouldn't you think? If he decides to leave Bama we will keep going. We've done it before and we'll do it again. Not one school has sustained for a lenghty time without some kind of problems. But the mian thing about all of this talk, his leaving Bama will not hurt you in any shape or form. Although it seems as if you are going into spasms just writing about it.

@MartinJFruge Every single thing that you wrote drips with jealousy. Who wouldn't jump at the chance for a promotion at their chosen profession? YOU wouldn't? If coach Saban leaves, then so be it. And as far as your idiotic statement about him not caring for his kids or school, you do not know what you are talking about. He is extremely committed to the players there. All you need to do is look it up, but you would  rather just spout off at the mouth with a load of ignorance.

Floyd i am a lifelong LSU fan and he did it to us and now he will do it to you and go to nfl, fail and come back to another sec team and gladly kick your buts and laugh about it sogo ahead and be proud of him when he does.Thats why i call all of you clowns at least we didn't see it coming but you had the opportunity to watch him do it to us and were still silly enough to give him big bucks so he could be comfottable until the nfl came calling again.you deserve it when he leaves.

@MartinJFruge  What part of we don't care and the University will survive do you not understand? You are probably one of those idiots that are still crying about the 2000 election. What a pitiful life you must live. Get over it. When he left you crybabies did you get a decent replacement? He can't win the big one and probaly never will, but many coaches haven't.
