In a report that coincides with the Philadelphia Eagles’ trip to take on the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night, a source close to head coach Andy Reid told The Trenton Times’ Mark Eckel that Reid could be the Cowboys’ coach next season. Of course, both Reid and current Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett would have to be fired before that could even happen.

From Eckel’s report:

According to an extremely reliable source, who is close to Reid, the long-time Eagles head coach could be the head coach of the archrival Cowboys next year. [...]

“I know a lot of people think Andy is going to San Diego next year, and I can see that happening,” the source said. “But I keep hearing Dallas. I think he can end up with the Cowboys. As a matter of fact, I think he will end up with the Cowboys, if Jason is fired.”

The embattled Reid has endured the worst season of his coaching career with the Eagles in 2012, and he was asked if he was thinking about resigning after a 31-6 drubbing against Washington on Nov. 18. After a 3-1 start to the season, the Eagles have lost seven straight games

Though Dallas has also limped to a disappointing 5-6 record this season, Garrett’s fate is less certain. Another name that has been thrown around for the Cowboys opening is Sean Payton, who was suspended this season for his role in the Saints’ bounty scandal. He will be a coaching free agent after the season.

I cant imagine any NFL owner would touch this guy.  He brought a drug dealer to the team training camp.

Sean Payton has either proved he is a great coach or a lousy delegator...or both.

Nah--- send the Eagles a Christmas present instead... Jets are looking to dump both a coach and a quarterback.

Perfect - a coach I can't stand going to a team I hate. Newsflash Cowboy fans - Sean Payton is not coming to Dallas - nor is any good or self-respecting coach. Until Jerry Jones sells the team the Cowboys will suck.

If the Cowboys really want to be successful, they should do the following:  Sean Payton as Head Coach, Jimmy Johnson as General Manager (he has forgotten more about football than Jerry Jones knows), and an absentee owner.  A Cowboys fan can dream.

Ooh, I don't like the sound of that.  I really like the sound of "Sean Payton could be the Cowboys coach" next season.  No offense to Reid, but no.  Cowboys fans do not want Reid, we certainly do not want Garrett, or Jerry Jones for that matter either!  We want Sean Payton.  (We're stuck with Jerry Jones).

Also, I have to agree wtih hen na gaijin below, Cowboys fans would also want Bill Cowher.  That would be cool.  Reid, not so much.

uhh, you had two sons that are convicted heroin addicts/dealers and one of them just offed himself on team facilities. maybe you need to take a year off and get some things straightened out at home.

Sean Payton.  NOT Andy Reid.  Ask yourself what Andy Reid has accomplished since Jim Johnson died.  (Hint: nothing.)

Don't see that happening, JJ is too much of a fan of the highly overrated Jason Garrett.

@John4 I can't see Jimmy Johnson putting out the effort at this point in his life necessary to be a great GM/team architect. By all accounts he's very, very content with semi-retirement (just doing the Fox show and spending the rest of his time lounging on his house boat).

@WillWillis1 Will, you are certainly correct, but a Cowboys fan can dream, right!

Note the Jimmy Johnson (as the Cowboys' HC) was in charge of the biggest turnaround (in 4 years) in NFL history.  1989 1-15. 1990 7-9. 1991 11-5 and a playoff win.  1992 first of two consecutive SB championships.  Who else has done that?  Nobody.

@DonHole  Don - "most coaches" didn't inherit the mess that was the 1989 Dallas Cowboys.  And Jimmy Johnson proved his worth by taking that sad sack team (after he re-built it to his liking) to consecutive SB championships starting three years later.  Has any coach who inherited a bad team, or even a GOOD team done that?
