Free agent Daisuke Matsuzaka has told media members in Japan that he is intrigued by the possibility of pitching for the San Diego Padres, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Daisuke Matsuzaka, whose once promising U.S. career was sidetracked by elbow reconstruction surgery in 2011, has told members of the Japanese media that he likes the idea of possibly restarting in San Diego. It seems he liked the city and the ballpark when he pitched at Petco Park in the first World Baseball Classic.

Matsuzaka had a 1-7 record, 8.28 ERA and 1.71 WHIP in 11 starts for the Boston Red Sox last season  after returning from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. The Padres are also reportedly interesting in pitcher Dan Haren, Shaun Marcum and Ubaldo Jimenez.

HA. I got two great, loud laughs out of such a short article.

#1. "career was sidetracked by elbow reconstruction surgery in 2011"

Umm, it wasn't sidetracked by not being able to get into the 6th inning, or leading the league in walks in 2008 despite only pitching 167 innings? Also gave up more hits per 9 innings that year. It wasn't sidetracked in 2009, when he only pitched 59 innings with a 5.76 ERA and 12.3 hits per 9 innings?

#2. "seems he liked the city and the ballpark when he pitched at Petco Park"

Hmm, a pitcher took a liking to the biggest ballpark in the majors? Imagine that. I bet he did. When you can't succeed anywhere, might as well go to where you'll fail the least.
