Sean Woods suspended: Morehead St. coach disciplined for confronting player
Morehead State University basketball coach Sean Woods has been suspended for one game by the university for his actions in the team’s 81-70 loss to Kentucky on Wednesday.
The Morehead State athletic department announced the suspension today on their web site.
“We recognize that the young men in our basketball program are students first and athletes second. It is our expectation that our coaches are first teachers, who reflect the core values of the university which includes valuing the individual and treating people with respect. Near the end of the game, Coach Woods’ interaction with one of our student-athletes fell short of that value and was unacceptable.
“We believe Coach Woods, while remorseful, is not above reproach. Therefore, he will be suspended for Monday night’s game against Norfolk State. This will allow Coach Woods to consider his action and behavior, and allow him time to contemplate the appropriate way to conduct himself with his players and on the sideline.”
The incident in question happened with nearly six minutes left in the second half, when senior point guard Devon Atkinson fouled out of the game. Walking back towards the bench, Woods pushed Atkinson in the back, then berated the player face-to face. Woods, in his first year at Morehead State, has shown boundless energy on the sidelines that has threatened to spill over, but this is the first time it has resulted in a suspension.
