Melky Cabrera will sign with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to a report from ESPNDeportes.com (link in Spanish). According to the report, Cabrera will sign a two-year, $16 million contract with the Canadian club.

Cabrera will come to Toronto after a 2012 season with the San Francisco Giants that was, to say the least, up-and-down. Cabrera hit extremely well in the first half of the season – well enough to earn his first All-Star nod. Cabrera won the All-Star game MVP award, but that would be his last honor of the season.  Cabrera was suspended for 50 games by MLB a month after the All-Star break after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

Cabrera, who at that point was a shoe-in for the NL batting title, requested that he be made ineligible to win the award. Cabrera’s suspension ran out in the Giants’ run to the 2012 World Series title, but he did not play a part in the postseason.

So, what were Cabera's numbers before last year? Was it enough to warrant this contract? The Giants didn't even want him back after his suspension was over. With the Yankees he had a fair bat and was a decent fielder. There was no act of contrition--a planned cover-up and a ridiculous mea culpa..."please remove my name from the race for the batting title." By the way, where is Selig? Too busy sunning himself in Miami.

Wow, Colon and Cabrera were really made to pay for breaking the rules last year, each got a pay raise!

Where can I go to vomit?  This signing makes me nauseous.  There is no guarantee that Cabrera regrets what he did, so there is no sign that he won't repeat it.  And remember that he went farther than just taking a prohibited substance.  He also built (or had built for him) a fake website about the product that he took.  That he recused himself from the batting title late is the season may have been at the insistence of his agent.  If so, it reflects well on the agent and not the player.

I have no problem if someone has done something in the past (juiced or abused other drugs or alcohol, for example) as long that that person understands their error and has made the necessary changes in their lives.  Miguel Cabrera is one of the most recent such players, but he joined a long list of others who fit that description.  Some of them have played for the Jays in the past, including one who is now in the HOF.  But there is no real indication that Melky Cabrera has joined that list.

Jays are going all in this year. Yankees aren't spending because they want to get under the luxury tax, Rays are stuck in this limbo of great pitching no hitting, the O's were hopefully a fluke and the Red Sox are a bigger mess than any team in the AL right now. The Jays have the richest owners so it's good to see them spending it. Still the team is hoping that Johnson, Reyes, Romero and now Melky all bounce back

Take that, Red Sux!  How do you like that, John Farrell?

While I don't condone use of PEDs half the "stars" in the league have admitted using them. This is a great move by the Jays and a real bargain in a league where guys hitting .270 with 15 home runs are getting paid $15 million per season.

The Red Sox better get used to fifth place in the AL East.
