Ben Roethlisberger’s injury could ‘kill him’ if ribs press against aorta

While Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was expected to miss time with a shoulder injury, a rib injury he also suffered on Monday night against the Chiefs is currently of even greater concern.

The rib injury is “rare and dangerous,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and could potentially be life-threatening.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Ed Bouchette described just how serious the problem is:

Roethlisberger said that on a scale of one to 10, the pain he is experiencing is at nine, according to NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala. Ten-year veteran Byron Leftwich, who has posted a 57.9 quarterback rating over four seasons with the Steelers, will start in his place on Sunday night in Pittsburgh.

Roethlisberger was enjoying one of the best regular seasons of his nine-year career, having thrown 17 touchdowns compared to just four interceptions.

@tonenae28 you seem really upset you've hitched your love affection on a rapist, and everyone that doesn't agree with you is a democrat?  with this type of logic supporting the republican party you can hopefully see why you guys lost the election...  don't worry though big ben will keep on raping girls for you, you big big man you.  i see you made your rounds to about 50 other comments so you're busy with your republican rape agenda i'll let you get back to that champ.

That's just karma for all the raping big Bens done in his life, all the poor girls that had this 6'7 rapist assault them, he deserves to die.  If anyone else raped chicks like this guy, you would all be wanting his head on a platter.

Football is not worth YOUR life. That is why others risk their's and get lots of money for it. Football players should consider themselves lucky to be paid so much for being human "bumper cars". After all, Roman emperors may have given gladiators a free night in the sack with some woman for a good performance. These football players get the palace and the ladies... although some ladies may not be willing participants.

rfparker94 WOW! That is one of the most idiotic posts i have ever read.  By the way, I am not a fan of the Steelers or Ben, and read this article out of interest.

rfparker94  You, sir, are an unmitigated dolt.  I may have suffered irreparable loss to my IQ for simply reading your post.  I am honestly quite shocked that you've even learned how to log onto a computer and type.  I hope that you haven't procreated - any progeny derived from your sub-mammalian genetic makeup would be hopelessly challenged.  If you haven't sired any offspring, then I would, in this instance, suspend my oppositon to forced sterilization to insure that your DNA would not pollute our already suspect  gene pool.  In fact, I would even go so far as to recommend that you consult with a neurosurgeon.  Determine whether he/she would be willing to attempt a transplant of a viable human brain to replace the tiny, liquid-filled nubbin that currently rests atop your spinal cord.

rfparker94 You realize, half-wit, that the Steelers have team physicians who have examined him, right? And that they are paying him huge amounts of money, right?

rfparker94  Please, by all means call Roethlisberger a sissy to his face.  He's actually played through some very painful injuries in the past and there is really no question about his toughness.  Furthermore, ask the Texans if the Raven's D is anything to fear these days.

People give him a break. If this happened to your son or daughter know matter the circumstances, or thing he or she has done in past you all we would be carring also. He's a human being with a spirit just like the rest of us . What he done in the past is behind him. It's is forgivable what he did or didn't do. I don't think it was blasphemy that he had done. God bless everyone

Isn't it interesting that the NFL has all of these new rules, new equipment, etc. to protect quarterbacks and:

Roethlisberger - out for several weeks with near fatal rib injury

Vick - out for the season (career) with serious concussion

Smith - out for several weeks with serious concussion

Quinn - out for several weeks with serious concussion

    Kolb- concussion

    Cutler - concussion

Conservative columnist George Will may have nailed this several weeks ago, "In 1980 there were 3 NFL players over 300 pounds, today there are 3 players over 350 pounds and 352 over 300 pounds."  As he goes on, the human body is not able to withstand the kinetic energy of being constantly battered by that much force.  I think the NFL has a weight problem and can solve some of these injuries by enforcing a player weight limitation.  It would be no different than saying a 180 lb kid cannot wrestle against a 120 lb kid.  Bring weight limits back to 280 +/- and I am guessing the injuries will drop dramatically and to boot, the athleticism of line men will increase.  The NFL better get on this before the league is no longer entertaining due to the massive number of injuries.

C.E.Daly I will never let my child play football.

    rp1588 5 pts

C.E.Daly Concussion awareness is way up.  In California, a law was passed requiring training for all HS coaches, and many youth sports organizations are doing the same.   This is the reason for the dramatic change recently.

The long term trend may very be real, but is difficult to determine because of the awareness and reporting differences.

I stopped watching football this year for some strange reason, I got tired of watching players smash into each other hoping that no one got hurt and all for a little pigskin ultimate goal of crossing the goal line. I actually enjoyed my weekends of watching movies and working around the house. Don't get me wrong I hope Ben Roethlisberger totally recovers and hopefully his football career hasn't come to an end.

I agree completely. There are so many more important things in life. There are too many injuries in football these days. Every game it seems that someone is being carted off on a stretcher. While there are injuries in other sports, they are not the result of men ramming into each other on purpose.

"Not the result of men ramming into each other on purpose"  ????  Let's see: hockey, basketball, rugby, (maybe) wrestling -  you get the idea.  I agree on the weight limits.  Have been football fan from the age of when American Football League the only game in town as the NFL did not exist, and leather helmets.  This season, I watched 3 games and, for the first time ever, walked away from the rest of the season because of the brutal hits, injuries, and weakened team unity. The stratospheric high salaries softens or corrupts the star players' willingness to play as a team.  Oh, and don't even try to convince me that football players do not use illegal steroids/drugs to pump up their sizes and strength.  Accordingly, drug testing must be instituted in pro-football beginning next season.

This injury illustrates the new normal in sports injuries. Either the player and team use Dr./ Patient privilege to not tell the public anything or the player interprets the Dr.'s diagnosis and makes themselves appear beyond courageous. I'm not suggestion Ben is not hurt but I take everything a pro athlete says with a grain of salt as most are coddled prima donnas who tell the truth about as often as they pick up a check.
