Jon Gruden is eager to return to coaching and could be the next head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles if they continue to falter this season, according to a report from the local Fox affiliate in Philadelphia.

Gruden, a one-time Eagles offensive coordinator, could be the team’s main man if the organization decides to fire Andy Reid.

From Fox29′s Howard Eskin:

“He enjoys working Monday Night Football in the ESPN Monday Night booth, but he is a coach and has the itch. I’m told he wants to go to a team that can win and the key has a quarterback.”

So, Eskin said that puts two teams in the mix, the San Diego Chargers, where Gruden is tight with general manager A.J. Smith, and they have a good quarterback with Phillip Rivers.

“And the Eagles are also a good fit for the Gruden requirements,” Eskin said. “He loves Philadelphia, thinks the Eagles will be a good team next year, and the key here: He likes the backup quarterback, Nick Foles, who he has already worked out while working for ESPN.”

Both Reid and quarterback Michael Vick have come under fire as the Eagles have limped to a 3-5 start to the season. They have lost their last four games, including a 28-13 drubbing against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night.

Gruden hasn’t been on the sidelines since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired him in 2008 after seven seasons with the organization. He is currently a Monday Night Football analyst at ESPN, and he has said he is happy in his current job.

I don't see Gruden leaving his gig at MNF.  He has taken it over and could be the next John Madden.  But, if he does come back Oakland would welcome you as you saw when you lit the torch a few weeks ago.  Al is gone.  Team needs a  lot of work, but he can do it.

Gruden will go to Philly, who wouldn't want to coach a dream team?

Eskin is usually wrong. I live in Philly, so I know. Gruden will proabably only take a job where the defense is already solid and the offense needs work. Like it was in Tampa when he took over. That's not the case, however, in Philly. Our defense stinks. Pass defense is atrocious. Nmandi Asomoghua is the biggest bust that ever came to Philly. What a stiff he is and what a disappointment. We thought we were getting Darrell Revis type player. NOT!

I would love to see Gruden in Cleveland. They have a new ownership, Weeden is decent and they have nowhere to go but up. San Diego is a bad fit as long as AJ Smith stays. He's run off sveral coaches- including Marty when the Chargers were still good. The Eagles have a LONG way to go to get good. Michael Vick is a shell of his former self.

Gruden has more rumors about him going to NFL/NCAA teams than anyone.  I remember the "Gruden to U of Miami done deal" statements being made a few years ago.  Hilarious.
