Billy Beane named MLB executive of the year
A’s general manager, Billy Beane, was named the MLB executive of the year, reports CBS Sports:
Beane won in a bit of a landslide, gathering 31 votes while Nationals’ GM Mike Rizzo received 13 and Rangers’ GM Jon Daniels got six. The Sporting News has presented this award since 1936. This is the second time Beane has won the award.
Last season was considered a rebuilding year for the club. After going 74-88 in 2011, Beane traded pitchers Trevor Cahill, Gio Gonzalez and Andrew Bailey. Starting pitchers Brett Anderson and Dallas Braden were also out with injuries, and the “rag-tag bunch” went through several roster shuffles. The team went 72-38 after June 1 and became only the fifth team in MLB history to win a division or pennant after trailing by 13 games or more at one point.
