Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he will always be GM

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he is not going to sell his team and he isn’t going to hire a general manager to take his place either.

Jones was asked Tuesday if he would ever step down as the general manager.

“We are not structured that way,” he said on KRLD-FM radio, a Dallas radio station. “We didn’t structure it that way with my ownership. There’s no way that I would be involved here and not be the final decision-maker on something as important as players, and that is a key area. That’s never been anybody’s misunderstanding.”

Jones and the Cowboys have complied a 123-124 regular season record since 1997. The Cowboys have won just two playoff games since their last Super Bowl appearance after the 1995 season.

“We’ve had success doing it this way and we’re going to have success in the future doing it this way,” Jones said. “It eliminates some very serious issues when you look around the league, as to creating an additional layer that you’re continually having decisions, making changes and doing those kinds of things.”

My 7 year old twins, and my wife of almost 9 years (seems much longer) are in disbelief when I tell them that the Cowboys used to be good.  When they lost to the Falcons this past Sunday, one of my girls said "they always lose" when she heard of the game.  How sad is that?  Jerry - you caused this.

I grew up in the Bay Area and have to watch the 9ers every week. I'm a Cowboy fan...on the edge of saying goodbye to incompetence.  It's amazing how the 9ers turned around a team by changing a coach...a talented coach. A past NFL QB like Garrett. That's where the similarity ends. Harbaugh demands accountability. Garrett is a friend to the players. Like raising a kid, that approach is a loser for may reasons.

In the mid 90's, 9er fans used to hate the cowboys...envy etc. Now the Cowboys brand is a like the government, its tainted not respected. No one gives a dam about the Cowboys in Nor Cal anymore. Jerry and Al Davis...no wonder they got along. Ego city. Jerry obviously doesn't care about the team fan base. He's developed a job for himself...a purpose in life. Without his soap box he would be an average Joe....He's never going to let go...just like Al Davis..Dallas ."Commitment to Excellence" is now Excrement. It's over. JJ's kids drink from the same fire hose..this is the beginning not the end. Ground Hog Day...Jerry is the ground hog. Wake up Jerry.

Call me Jerry...Eddy D and I will buy the team and create a position for you. Anything but GM or coach have at it.

Stop going to games.

This guy, for all his $$$$$$, is truly an idiot. "experience holds a dear school, but fools learn at no other. ".......... "We've had success doing it this way"???? Since when.....this team has not been relevant since Jimmy Johnson left.....It's amazing to me what an egomaniac can convince himself of. Get a REAL GM who actually knows something about evaluation, both talent AND character, then your team MIGHT return to prominence........ the alternative, just keep on being another NFL doormat  every Sunday Jerry!

Jerry's ego bought the team in the first place. Jerry lives in a different world therefore he never feels the embarrassment of his ineptitude and poor judgment. This is all about Jerry, not the franchise. The franchise will continue to suffer.

All you Cowboys haters out there are obviously going to enjoy the next decade of Cowboys' mediocrity/ineptitude.

How old is Jerry, anyway?  Not his "plastic surgery appearing" age, but his actual age.

Phew!  For a minute there, I thought they might be good again soon.  Problem averted.

Well, I think the quote was incomplete.  Jerry Jones actually said: "I will always be the Cowboys' GM, but clearly, I will never be a capable GM".  This was followed with: "Since I know nothing about football, and my main focus is increasing revenue.  I will be paying part time attention to a position that requires full time attention".

Now, doesn't that make more sense?  Yes, it does.

Jerry Jones is a great owner and great GM. Don't change a thing, Jerry, everything's fine with the Cowboys!

If Jerry had more brains than ego, he'd take a cue from the Cowboys original owner Clint Murchinson.  Hire a strong GM, hire a great Coach, then disappear and let them run things.  Worked for 20 straight winning seasons!

I'm impressed with Jones as GM. Since he has been running things the Cowboys have found more ways to lose games that they should have won than any other team in the NFL. And what is the one common factor in all those defeats? Jerry Jones. You go Jerry!

Spare me folks, please. The Cowboys have won a couple of games, have been in the playoffs and have been competitive. Sorry that Jimmy Johnson set the bar so high, but be glad for those years at least. Remember the 80's Cowboys fans? The 'Boys lose because everyone has to lose at one time or another. I'm a Browns fan and a general manager hasn't done us a bit of good since the early 90's. At least you guys can say any given year you have a chance....which is more than most can say.

As a 40+ years Giants Fan I find a Jerry's position reassuring.  But I think he should rename them the Dallas Jones-boys.  These haven't been the Cowboys I used to dread for years now.

All Jerry Jones cares about is $$$. He doesn't give one iota about his team's success on the field. As long as he has his misguided Cowboy fans all over the world buying into his brand and coming to the games, he doesn't care how they finish. He just runs the biggest soap opera in sports; bigger than even WWE. Fine by me as I'll always laugh at their incompetence.

Anyway, I expect Jason Garrett to be fired and then Jerry will bring Atlanta DC Mike NoWin in to be his new runner boy.

It's funny that Jerry says they've had success doing it this way.  Yes the Cowboys have, but does Jerry remember that was before he become GM. The Boys have a losing record since he took full control. Jerry controls the Head Coach and we all know it. Hey, if he paid me $5 million a year I would do what ever he asked me to do.  Sad for us Cowboys fans.  Well there's always the Texans.

I'm with you draygee.  How out-of-touch is Jerry when he thinks one game under .500 since 1997 is "success" ?  WIthout Jimmy Johnson's personnel decisions early on in his ownership years they would never would have won a Superbowl !  Jerry is clueless when it comes to putting a team together.  As long as he's the GM, I'll done with them too !

draygee

I am seriously considering dropping my allegiance to the Cowboys that I have had since 1970.  For Jerry Jones, it is a matter of ego and not what is best for the team.  His ownership has consisted of mediocre teams, with the only exception being the glorious Jimmy Johnson years.  They will never be Super Bowl contenders as long as he refuses to hire a "football man" to handle the player personnel decisions.  I am done with them!!

@SteveErnst Steve Ernst.  Classic end to your post.  "Stop going to games".  That is awesome.

@lionoah A 123-124 record over the last 15 years doesn't seem all that competitive to me. Better than the Browns (sorry), but not much to boast about. But we all know JJ's ego would prohibit him from ever being capable of sharing credit when (if) things ever go well.

@draygee I have to agree 100%.  I have been a fan since 1972, and a huge fan since high school (1980's).  The 1990s (commonly known by Cowboys fans as "The Jimmy Johnson years"), were clearly the best ever.  Ever since Jimmy Johnson was fired by Jerry Jones (no matter what story you hear), the Cowboys have been an incomplete team, lead by an egotistical fool.  (Raiders fans, I feel the pain you were going through all those years with Al Davis.  However, at least Davis was capable at one time, so no disrespect to the Raiders here).  Jerry Jones, on the other hand, is little more than a plastic surgery addicted blowhard.  He knows nothing about football, nothing about being a capable GM of an NFL team, and simply cannot grasp the bigger picture, which is important when assembling a 53 man roster.  He actually told Bob Costas this past weekend in a interview that the current Cowboys roster is SB worthy.  And he was being serious.  Not sure if Jones is familiar with the 49ers, Giants, Bears, Falcons, Packers, Saints and Seahawks.  All of whom play in the NFC, and all of whom are far better than the Cowboys.  (All of whom also have full time GMs who are NOT owners).  The Cowboys are not even in the top half in the NFC.  How in the world could they be SB worthy?  Jerry, why did you have to go out and ruin the Cowboys by purchasing the team?  Jerry, you're making me reconsider by allegiance to the team.  That really hurts.

@draygee - I wish more Cowboy fans were like us! I was done with them many years ago.
