Steve Spurrier: Alabama ‘would be favored by a little bit’ against certain NFL teams

Steve Spurrier, the current head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, said that based on his experience coaching multiple Div. 1 college football teams, the Washington Redskins and 10 years as an NFL player, the Alabama Crimson Tide would have a legitimate shot at beating a number of NFL teams this season, according to comments Spurrier made during an appearance Wednesday on The Dan Patrick Show:

“Alabama, gosh, they look like they could beat a couple of those NFL teams that I’ve watched on Sundays. I think a lot of the oddsmakers out there, that usually know what’s going on, I’d guess Alabama would be favored by a little bit.”

Spurrier, who went 7-9 in his first season as coach of the Redskins, was outscored 85–31 in his last three games with the team in 2003. Overall, he had a 12–20 (.375) coaching record in the NFL, a stark contrast to his 204–77–2 (.724) record coaching in the NCAA. He had won a national championship with Florida in 1996 and has been with the South Carolina Gamecocks since 2005. The team is currently 7-2 this season.

The comments from Spurrier come despite his own questionable transition from the college to pro game. He had won the 1996 National Championship under Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, who went on to play quarterback for Spurrier in 2002 as a member of the Washington Redskins. The Redskins finished that season with a losing record of 7-9, so his most recent comments about Alabama are no doubt met with skepticism.

Love the Tide but this is laughable. I am guessing this was a compliment due to the balance play and how well the Tide has been executing. They may look like they are on another level but that level is not the NFL.  They would easily lose by 40 points to the Panthers, Chiefs or Jaguars

Spurrier can't really believe what he said. He is does, he is clearly suffering from dementia.

Ridiculous! NFL=brotherhood of men...College=bunch of boys

I appreciate the compliment but there's no way we would beat even the worst NFL team.  I'm worried sick about trying to win at LSU much less an NFL team.

They might beat an NFL team that Spurrier is coaching but not any team today.  In the backround I could hear his team chanting "SEC, SEC"
