UEFA fines Lazio $50K for fans’ racist abuse of Tottenham players
UEFA confirmed it was fining Lazio £32,500 (approximately $52,450) after fans shouted “monkey chants” at Tottenham players during a game on Sept. 20, reports Sky Sports. The chants were directed at striker Jermain Defoe, right winger Aaron Lennon and midfielder Andros Townsend.
The fine has been issued by UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body, although the Serie A club have up to three days to challenge the findings of the panel.
UEFA president Michel Platini was in attendance at the game, which ended 0-0 after three Tottenham goals were ruled out.
The news comes after fallout from England’s U21 game in Serbia in which defender Danny Rose was the target of racial slurs from the crowd. Rose kicked a ball into the crowd after the final whistle and was sent off as a fight ensued on the field.
