Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann had surgery Tuesday to repair a right shoulder that was plagued with soreness throughout the season, reports MLB.com.

Braves orthopedic surgeon Dr. Xavier Duralde performed the procedure to the posterior portion of McCann’s shoulder.

The team did not say how long McCann’s recovery would be. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that McCann would face a recovery period of four to six months and his availability to start next season is in doubt. An MRI exam in August showed a frayed labrum and cyst in the shoulder, which bothered McCann while hitting.

McCann, a six-time All-Star, hit 20 homers and had 67 RBIs in 121 games this past season and hit a career-low .230.

Atlanta holds a $12 million option on McCann for the 2013 season and has until three days after the World Series to decide whether to exercise the clause.
