Matt Cassel reportedly could lose Chiefs starting quarterback job

The Kansas City Chiefs are growing disenchanted with Matt Cassel as their starting quarterback, Yahoo’s Jason Cole reported Monday.

From Cole’s report:

“Look, there’s a big reason why they went after Peyton Manning as hard as they did this offseason,” said a source with knowledge of Chiefs president Scott Pioli’s thinking. “What you’re seeing from Cassel is pretty much what was expected. He’s a really nice backup, not a starter.”

Cole’s report suggests that if the Chiefs had a better alternative than Brady Quinn or Ricky Stanzi as backup, Cassel might have already been benched.

The Chiefs came into the 2012 season with sky-high expectations and expected to get back a healthy Cassel for a full season after he missed almost half of last year with a hand injury.

But Cassel’s start to the season thus far has been lackluster, at best. He has thrown just five touchdowns along with seven interceptions, and his quarterback rating sits at 70.4. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are mired in a 1-3 start and already sit two games behind the San Diego Chargers in the AFC West.

Cassel broke out in 2008 with the New England Patriots, when he replaced the injured Tom Brady for a full season. The Chiefs subsequently traded a second-round pick for Cassel and committed to him as their starter. He justified the hype in 2010, throwing 27 touchdowns to just seven interceptions while leading the Chiefs to the playoffs.

Despite this season’s struggles, Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel committed to Cassel as his starter.

“Even after he had those turnovers, he came back and drove the team down the field, so we think he’s capable,” Crennel said Monday. “We just have to get him to be more consistent.”

If anyone thinks that with a different QB, Coach, Coordinator, Owner, City, Stadium, Fans, etc the Chiefs would magically have a chance to win more than 9 games this year.....you're absolutely out of your mind.

So, a QB that couldn't even get on the field in college, but managed to string together one decent season on a superbowl contender with a great coaching staff, may possibly be benched? Shocking...

I dont know who said Chiefs "went hard after Manning" but thats crap. They gave him a passing look to shut up the fans so Pioli could go right on doing his "Patriot Way" malarky and rightly for once, backed off when somebody told them Elway and Mannings pal's relationship put them out of contention from the get-go. Miami too. And Brady Quinn aint no replacement. He's just another retread backup brought in b/c there was familiarity from Cleveland.

They HAD a competent backup. His name was Kyle Orton. But now HE'S going to be the starter in Dallas as finally the Romo experiment is coming to an end. But we couldnt have signed him either. He wanted no part of pea-brain Piolis magmt room of fools. And head pea-brain Hunt dosent have the football sense to know any better. This aint rocket science. Hunt's only good at one thing; greed. Just like the rest of the NFL owners who got their backsides handed to them along with owner-stooge Goddell in the referee debacle.

Pioli needs to go and he can take Cassel with him. And either Crennel is D-coor or HE can go too. The guy should have gotten in the beginning; Cowher, probably cant be had mid-season but he's your fix. Just get him an O-coor,. We'll need a safety next t Berry (who desent impress me much), to jettison Dorsey and/or Jackson the D-line busts and get a f/a DE (Jared Allen we miss ye) and we're pretty set. We have talent at RB, WR, LB, CB and most skill-set positions. Just not in the front office or ownership. We've been cursed with moron management in KC for too long.

The fans here are rabid but kinda dumb and let too much go instead of demanding better. We're kinda nice people. But we deserve better. And you know who IS available I'd bet THIS YEAR? -Marty. Just MAKE the guy hire an O-coor. Anybody but that Patriot retread we got now.

Go with Quinn now. Like yesterday (2 games ago). Get David Garrard who would be especially good addition. Even Vince Young or Tyler Thigpen from Buffalo would both be good replacement potentials. Too much talent all across the rest of the roster to not go big now at change for QB. Do it now Mr Hunt..Mr Pioli..Mr Crennel.

Sick and tired of Cassel! Has NO fire!  Why not start Quinn?  Its not as if we have much to lose! Sure wish the owners  would break open that piggybank and GET us some decent players!

I would have already mothballed him two games ago, his body language was ATROCIOUS!  I would go ahead and try Quinn first, it's not as if they'll get worse QB play than they've gotten thus far.

@RobertM Vince Young got cut at second cuts of training camp.  He's an FA - and not one worth pursuing.
