Yanks owner says jobs are safe after blowing 10 game division lead
The New York Yankees brass want to make it clear that if the team does not win the division everyone on the staff who has a job will keep their job, reports ESPN.com.
“Jobs are not riding on this,” Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said.
The Yankees, who are currently tied with the Baltimore Orioles for the American League East lead with three games to go, had a 10-game lead after July 18th.
Steinbrenner said he told those feelings to pitcher Andy Pettitte.
“Andy and I were texting about two or three months ago when we had the 10-game lead, I said, ‘We really need you back,’ “Steinbrenner said. “‘We really need your leadership because I have a feeling this is going to be a lot closer than 10 games come the end.’ It is. We built up that 10-game lead. It was a great thing. We had injuries, as other clubs did. It is what it is.”
Steinbrenner also said he plans on trimming the Yankees’ payroll by 2014. Currently, the team is paying $189 million in salaries.
