Metta World Peace says the Lakers want to go 73-9

Los Angeles Lakers forward Metta World Peace is making big boasts about the upcoming season, especially since the Lakers acquired talents such as Dwight Howard, two-time MVP Steve Nash.
Put those pieces with Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol and World Peace says he has a certain record in mind: The Chicago Bulls record for most wins in a season. Last season, the Lakers went 41-25 in a lockout shortened season before being eliminated in five games by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Semifinals.
“We definitely want to beat the Bulls record and go 73-9, that’s definitely something that I want to do,” World Peace said via Sports Radio Interviews. “Whoever is out there at the beginning of the season then we gotta get it. It’s as simple as that. We just have to go get it. I think people still have to go through the Lake Show. I think everything goes through the Lake Show.”
World Peace said that the Bulls record of 72-10, set in the 1995-96 season, has been on his mind.
“No question. You try to snatch records before you leave this earth. You gotta try to do a lot of great things so it’s definitely a goal,” he said. “With Dwight Howard, (Steve) Nash, Kobe (Bryant), myself, Pau (Gasol) and then (Antawn) Jamison and a lot of great additions it’s something that’s possible.”

LikeThe biggest reason this is not happening is that this Lakers team has not played together under the same system long enough. The Bulls core had been together for a long time. They knew the system and executed it well together they all knew their roles.
The first half of the season for the Lakers is going to be a mess as they figure each other out. By the time they do figure each other out they will be too old to compete. Kobe's game is already dropping off quickly. Nash doesn't have long. Metta's game is already gone. If this team had gotten together 3-4 years ago they could have made a run at 72 wins.

LikeDanielSmith1 Actually 95-96 was a new team. Scottie/MJ were all that was left from the previous run. Coach Jackson really did an amazing job to get a sensitive young Kukoc to 6th man of the year status (his 2nd year in the league), Ron Harper to focus on D (former big scorer) & the rest of the group to hustle hard on D and get open to knock down shots. The biggest two issues for the Lakers is there is NO MJ and NO PHIL JACKSON! Kobe is not, never has been and never will be Michael Jordan! Mike Brown, come on. lol

LikeP0is0nedKoolA1 Kukoc came to Chicago in 93. Harper 94, Kerr 93, Longley 93, Wennington 93. Rodman was new that year. His game (rebounding at outstanding levels) translates to any team very easily. He didn't have to learn any offense since he wasn't involved anyways. Rebounding is the one skill that always translates to the new environment (college -> NBA).

LikePoisoned, did MJ ever score 81 pts, Kobe is not that far from MJ, btw what happened to MJ when he competed against L. Bird, Bird ate him up for 2 yrs, so you see MJ is overrated after all !!!!!!

LikeDanielSmith1, it's definitley possible with the talent they have but I think they do need to pick up another quality PG for the 2nd unit (Barbosa, Agent 0, etc. ) and it will depend on how M. Brown coaches them this season, he really needs to rely on the 2nd unit to be productive and to do this he needs to play them from day 1, they have to know that the coach and the starters are confident in them, thus confidence breeds confidence. I know they will make mistakes but Brown has to ride it out because in the long run it will be best for the team and the vets.

LikePerhaps 60 wins. Maybe 63 wins. But not 70 wins. And most certainly not 73 wins. Reminds me of Vince Young's "DreamTeam" proclamation. I think Metta just jinxed the Lakers season.

LikeThe Bulls team was Deep that year. The Lakers have no Bench and DH isn't going to be there for the beginning of the season so that means they have to play Gasol or a weaker player at C and that can hurt them the first month of the year

LikeJesseWhiteIII 6th man of the year Toni Kukoc. One of the best 3 pt shooters in Steve Kerr & a COACH who set up a system where everyone knew their role and played it! Jud Buechler got open to knock down shots, Bill Wennignton set up to knock down the baseline shot with ease etc. It starts with the Coach. Spolestra & Brown are nowhere near what Phil Jackson could draw up. Heat/Lakers have zero chance of beating 72 wins

When the Lakers accomplish all this then we can talk. If you think that Mike Brown is like Jackson, Metta is like Pippen & Jamison is like Kukoc (clutch shooter/passer that year) then I have a bridge here in NYC to sell you real cheap!

LikeCharlesAlexander Jackson created a system in which Harper & Longley's strength could be highlighted. Haper's Defense and Longley's big body. This is why Jackson was a great coach and won 11 titles.

LikeHarper actually was a great fit and he played great D Nash has no D. Longley hit FTs so he was useful and they played C by commitee.
