Yankees: LHP Andy Pettitte will make return to mound on Tuesday

The New York Yankees announced on Thursday that lefthander Andy Pettitte will rejoin the rotation on Tuesday. Pettitte has been out since June 27 with a broken fibula.

On Wednesday in Boston, Pettitte threw a 55-pitch simulated game and said, according to Roger Rubin of the New York Daily News: “I felt like my command was really good again today and my stuff, everybody … thought my stuff was great. Hopefully I can get back in there and try to get into the rotation. That’s what I would like to do.”

Rubin wrote that Pettitte was due to be reexamined by the team doctor on Friday, but evidently he passed manager Joe Girardi’s eyeball test. Girardi said that he thought Pettitte might be able to throw 70 or 75 pitches against the Toronto Blue Jays, which should get him through five or six innings.
