Carlson, 22, scored nine goals and 32 points in 82 games with a minus-15 rating last season.
Two weeks ago, Carlson told The Washington Post he was not concerned that the Capitals might not get a deal done before the possible lockout or new Collective Bargaining Agreement.
“I love Washington, I love being here. I stayed here for a lot of the summer,” Carlson said. “I like my teammates, I like the rink, I like the fans. I can’t imagine playing anywhere else.”
