Nearly 60 players placed on waivers in anticipation of NHL lockout
An early waiver window was established to allow NHL teams to send players to the minors according to the National Post. Typically, teams are not able to waive players until 10 days before regular season starts–the first games are scheduled for Oct. 11 this year–but an exception was made due to the impending lockout. Teams have until midnight on Saturday to waive players on non entry-level contracts.
Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported via Twitter that nearly 60 players had already been placed on waivers:

The NHL’s current CBA expires on Sept. 15. The NHLPA and league have been meeting in New York since Wednesday, but the two sides are still far apart.
Such a shame to destroy the NHL brand like this.. Oh well, lets go MLS?!
NHL ...... You've just pissed away everything.
History is repeating itself! Except, if you include the foreign superstars greed and playing the NHL against Euro hockey. A long strike will kill marginal NHL franchises.
