Joe Namath slams Tim Tebow, again

Hall of Famer Joe Namath is hoping New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez stay healthy the entire season, because he can’t imagine backup Tim Tebow taking the reins.
Namath once again said Tebow has a great work ethic, but questions his skills and doesn’t think Tebow is even a suitable back-up.
“God forbid something happens to Sanchez. See, this is where I’m confused. I don’t think the second guy really is Tebow,” Namath told ESPN.com.
Tebow had only 11 yards on five carries in the Jets opening day blowout of the Buffalo Bills and has completed 47 percent of his passes over his career.
“I don’t think he can consistently play the quarterback position as we know it as opposed to the Wildcat without improving his passing accuracy,” Namath said of Tebow. “You’ve got to be more accurate than that today, and Tim’s got a big motion. He’s working on it, and he can improve it. So that remains to be seen.”

joe willie's a party animal---he hates tebow and his views--no surprise. Mark is a crazy man at the NY clubs---the chicks want him and joe wants to be like him.

LikeJoe Namath's career spanned 13 years in the NFL. In 2 of those 13 years did he ever throw more TDs than Ints. Year 1 he had 18 TDs & 15 Ints. Year 5 he had 19 TDs and 17 Ints. The other 11 years he had more interceptions than TDs. In year 3 he threw 26 TDs but had 28 Ints. Career TDs-173, Interceptions-220; 47 more interceptions than TDs. His career completion percentage: 50.1%. Do I need to say anything more Mr. Namath? Stats from NFL.com

Namath has no wife no woman 2 wild unmarried daughters with illegitimate kids dumped on him and mooching off old Joe. Joe Namath is nothing but a mess and an angry drunken old fool who cannot deal with no-one caring what the senile old goat has to say about anything. Namath played 45 years ago big deal.

LikeCome on, Joe, quit dragging yourself in the mud, and, give the kid a break! Hey, he is not going to get better unless he plays; an, we cannot find that out the way things are. Last time he did that consistently, he took the Denver Broncos on a run to the playoffs! I might add, he had a better winning percentage with the Broncos, than his replacement currently has! Now, he has been a class act in the way he is handling his current punishing isolation from any meaningful participation in the game he loves. Truly, a team player. No need for legends to pile on, Joe!

LikeExactly - who cares what Joe thinks, I'm not a Tebow fanatic. Look at Namath's career stats. He had the one game in the Superbowl where he bragged they were going to win and the defense held the other team down enough. Joe Namath's best was walking around with fur coats and being Broadway Joe. His career completion percentage was a whopping 50%. In 13 NFL Season he threw 173 TDs and had 220 interceptions. In those 13 seasons, he only had two seasons where he barely had more TDs than interceptions. That one big win Jets put the AFL on the map and other than that Namath is a mediocre overhyped athlete.

Like@MichaelHart In all fairness to Joe, half of the time he was lucky if he could stand in the pocket; that is how banged-up his knees were. In spite of all, however, he had the ability to thread a needle with his passes before you could bat an eyelid. OK, so Joe could throw, and, Tebow, so far, not that well. Still, Tebow did something his first 3/4 season that Joe did as well: took his team to the playoffs with improbable, clutch, llast-minute, wins! Tebow needs to play consistently, if, not the Jets, then, somewhere else. Only then will we know if he can continue to be a winner (as he already was in his one, 3/4. starting season)!

And, when he was asked, it was probably because he is admired for his football playing days & not his family life. Give Joe a break as I don't think anyone asked for your opinion of Joe, did they? I'm not positive, but feel like, by your anger, that you might be one of those Republicans campaigning for Romney. (smile)

LikeThere's no way in hell you can compare Namath's era (when quarterbacks were still men) and today. 2012 rules are more finesse than the Lingerie Bowl (google that brutal hit!). Football stats are the most irrelevant stats in pro sports (QB ratings being the biggest joke), especially when attempting to compare eras. Forget Ben Davidson breaking his jaw, Namath took more hits in his day than any of the queens that play today (save for Roethlisberger, Vick and maybe Eli Manning who receive no league protection). Vicious hits (even 4-5 steps late) were just part of the game. A QB's most valuable asset was simply being tough enough to stay upright, in the game and get the job done, no matter how ugly or gritty. Broadway Joe from Beaver Falls is a winner - on the field, at the bar and with the ladies. That's why he has so many haters.

LikeAs a Denver fan, and Tebow skeptic I had to suffer through the whole Tebow / Orton drama. I was excited when Tebow when Tebow got the start simply because Orton was so terrible. I would prefer Sanchez over Tebow any day of the week. With that being said, as much as I hate to admit it, with Tebow, it isn't about stats. He DOES find a way to win. At the end of the day, I guess the only stats that should matter are the Win / Loss ones... But it is so hard to put faith in a guy like Tebow who is probably the worst pocket QB in the league.

LikeI live in Colorado, and if you're actually a Denver fan, I would assume you also noticed Fox and McCoy's lousy play-calling last year, which allowed Tebow an opportunity to throw maybe once every five or six plays. Tell me, how many NFL qbs can get in any sort of rhythm with that type of play-calling? Why do you think that Tebow's passer rating soared in the fourth quarter? Could it be because Fox opened up the offense and let Tebow throw since they were usually behind at that point and needed to score? Perhaps you should look a little closer at the reason for Tebow's struggles early in games as opposed to when he's so much better at the end of the game, when the pressure's the greatest.

Like@pljaye I am with you on this one. I noticed that also, and I am not a Denver fan; but, I definitely followed Tebow. Folks ought to take into account, that the only time this kid was given the opportunity to play consistently, he was a winner! No small thing to take that team to the playoffs after the dismal start it had! Moreover, he had a winning percentage that is higher than what his successor is currently posting! Just saying....it isn't fair to bash him~!

LikeReally, I don't see why people go ballistic about Namath's comments :
All he said was that Tebow need to substantially improve his passing in order to become a starting NFL quarterback, which is obvious to anyone who's got a passing familiarity with the way football is played today, at the top.
I quote :
"I don’t think he can consistently play the quarterback position as we know it as opposed to the Wildcat without improving his passing accuracy,”
The operative word here being "consistently". I really don't see how one can disagree with that statement.
And Namath's comment is far from being disrespectful of Tebow :
“You’ve got to be more accurate than that today, and Tim’s got a big motion. He’s working on it, and he can improve it. So that remains to be seen...
Does he say that Tebow sucks ? No. he says Tebow needs to improve.
Does he say that Tebow is a "lost cause" who never will be able to play starter at QB ? No. he says that remains to be seen.
How can that be construed as "slamming" Tebow is a mistery.... until of course you remember that titles in that internet age is all about making people mouseclick on it.
The only one "slamming" tebow is the cheap hack who wrote the title.

LikeJoe Namath has a career completion percentage of right at 50%, if I am not mistaken he only had a season or two where he threw more TDs than he did interceptions. Joe Namath was a joke at Quarterback and would not make a single NFL roster today. He made a bold prediction and he and his team backed it up. That is all he ever did. He has no right publicly bashing Tebow the way he does, everyone is entitled to an opinion I know but there is no need to put it out in the media the way he does. He is scared to death that Tebow is going to be the Jet that finally makes people forget about his drunk ass!!

LikeDavid47 're simply crazy. Joe Namath was one of the most gifted QBs in the history of pro football, despite being essentially crippled, and playing on horrible teams in the 70s. Put Namath on the Cowboys or Steelers and they win 5 Super Bowls. He's simply one of the best passers in history-the picks were due to the Jets always being behind by 2 TDs, and being the only skilled player on the Offense. He attempted throws no one else would because he had no choice.

LikeI hate to break it to you Tebow lovers, but Namath is right. For all the hard work people talk about.....he still isn't getting better. You keep saying give him time, but after 3 years there still is no improvement in his ability to pass. You couple that with the 15+ he's been a quarterback, and you will come to the conclusion that he won't get better. That is if you stop looking at him with love in your eyes, and start looking at him with the eyes that expect to see improvement. Do that and you'll see that he is severely lacking on the improvement. Which is one reason why John Elway pulled the trigger on trading him. I saw 3 rookie QB's on Sunday that I feel are light years ahead of Tebow when it comes to playing the position. If he is as humble as all of you claim, he would realize that he's not good enough to play QB in the NFL, but he is good enough to play in the NFL. But in his ARROGANCE, he insist on playing QB which will hurt his legacy in the end. I like Tebow he's real good kid, and has the potential to be a good player in the league. But as QB...........He couldn't hit the ocean if he was standing on the bottom.

LikeEven Namath doesn't believe that Namath is right. He's an old man clinging to whatever semblance of fame he has left. He claims to love Rex Ryan and how he does things, but bashes any decision he's asked about...As far as Tebow, he did lead Denver to some big wins (yea yea...NFC West is weak...completion percentage is low...etc etc). The Ws are there to back him up. Your 3 amazing rookies don't have that yet. I can't imagine that all Tebow is in New York for is to run 2-3 yard scrambles up the middle; we're in Week 2, let's give this thing a chance to play out before we start throwing people into the ocean.

Likedanerodriguez It's the AFC west, and that D was the reason they were competitive. they were holding teams to 13 points or less. And those 3 rookies ARE better passers then him. Again he's been the league for 3 years and still hasn't improved his passing, not even a little. He's misses receivers, skips passes on the ground, over throws on simple 5 and out passing drills. Like I said stop looking at him love in your eyes and look at him with eyes that expect improvement. And the W's they went 8 and 8 and backed in to the playoffs, that's nothing to hang your hat on. Not to mention that no other team wanted to trade for him. But then again you don't know that Denver is in the AFC, so I doubt you know much about football as a whole. Btw I didn't say anything about throwing people in the ocean. I said he couldn't hit the ocean if he was standing on the bottom, as in his passing skills are horrible. .
