NFL Network to add goal-line pylon cameras

The NFL Network is planning to give television viewers a new goal-line angle.
NFL Network Senior V.P. of production and programming Mark Quenzel said via conference call:
“We’re playing around with a camera, believe it or not, that’s going to be in the pylon. I don’t know if we’re going to have it this week. We’re still working out some kinks on the pylons, that allow us to see goal line stands, those types of things, and we’re going to add a couple of cameras for isolating players.”
The pylon cameras may make their debut in the Chicago Bears-Green Bay Packers game on Thursday night.
Successful testing of the pylon camera could lead to the league’s replay officials gaining an additional angle for ruling on whether or not the ball crossed the goal line.

Why not put a chip in the ball and sensors in the pylons. Then whenever the ball breaks the plane, there is no question. No need for cameras.

LikeWhere is the camera going to be - in the top of the pylon, so they can decide whether or not the ball was "inside the pylon" when it crossed the goal line, or pointing toward the other pylon, to determine if the ball crossed the goal line? One problem with the first type is, if the pylon isn't absolutely vertical, then you have the problem of "was the ball really out of bounds when it broke the plane?"

LikeThe NFL should call the pylon cam something else, like the junkcam.
