Former Pro Bowl wide receiver Roy Williams, who played for the Chicago Bears last season, announced that he has retired from the NFL, according to NFL.com:

“There was no need for me to go back,” Williams told the newspaper after announcing his retirement on Facebook. “It’s hard to quit when you have been doing something the third grade. I’m in good shape. … I can still play. But when I declined to workout in Miami, I knew I was done.”

Williams had gone through a workout with the Houston Texans this offseason but the team didn’t end up offering him a contract. The Miami Dolphins asked him to workout but he declined the offer and decided it was time to retire from the game.

He was drafted No. 7 overall in the 2004 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions and went on to have his best season in 2006 when he was named to the Pro-Bowl and led the NFC with 1,310 yards.

Last season with the Bears, Williams had 37 catches, 507 yards and two touchdowns:

“Put up good numbers my first few years, went to a Pro Bowl then I got to Dallas and it stopped,” Williams said. “It is what it is. God had a plan for me. The grass ain’t always greener on the other side.”

One of the greates college Wide receivers ever, I'm still not sure what happened in Dallas. Good luck Roy I know you are a smart guy and have most of your $$$, right?

When Roy played in Detroit his annoying habit of celebrating 1st down receptions while the Lions were getting blown out aggravated so many fans.  When Jerry Jones made that foolhardy trade to get Roy there wasn't many people here in Michigan that didn't do the happy dance knowing they didn't have to witness the infamous '1st Down Point' celebration at ford Filed anymore.

He seemed to go downhill from there.  Roy never seemed to have his game completely focused on the field & his play in Dallas reflected it.  The infamous strip of Roy Williams on November 25, 2010 will forever live in every Cowboy fans; memory.  Roy is clearly going for a TD to ice a victory for Dallas except he didn't pay attention to the NO defender closing in on him.  After the strip Drew Brees took NO 89 yards for a TD and the win.

The infamous sending of a $76K  engagement ring via the USPS to Miss Texas USA 2009 Brooke Daniels.  She had previously let him know she didn't want to marry him yet he sent the ring (along with $5K for bills and sports items for her brother) anyway.  He had to file a lawsuit before her dad sent the ring back.

Dallas had seen enough- he was cut and signed on with the Bears (Jerry Jones wasn't about to compound that foolish trade by allowing Roy to continue to collect on that lavish contract he gave him).  He was OK there yet had some noticeable drops (just like in Detroit and Dallas).  One year and done in ChiTown.

Hopefully he saved some money and is better at finances than he is at affairs of the heart and keeping his head in the game.

I remember watching him play at UT.  I thought at the time that he was the best receiver I had ever seen.  I'm an Aggie, so I don't hand out praise like that to Longhorns lightly.  He could totally dominate a college football game.  Goes to show that once you are in the NFL you have to step up your game because you are no longer the biggest or the fastest.  He had a far better career than most do.  Hopefully he saved some money and will be productive in his next venture.

I kept waiting for Roy Williams to be the next big-time receiver. It never came to fruition. Not sure why.

Roy looks like a monster.  Roy does not play like a monster.  Never has.

Oh, this was a quote from Roy on facebook.  Well, now the poor grammar is understandable.  Roy did not go to a real college.  He went to the University of Oklahoma.  Clearly the English department there (not their) did not do their (not there) job!

...declined to work (space) out ...

Unbelievably poor grammar.

(You could have used "declined invitation to a workout in Miami" but you did not.

(Workout is a noun.  Work (space) out indicates a verb).

The movie "Idiocracy" is occurring.

Hope he keeps God in his life--X NFL players sometimes have a difficult time adjusting.

Stay off the Krispy Kremes and McDeath burgers or I'm sure you're gonna be pushing 350 soon.

@John4 If you're going to be an obnoxious grammar Nazi, at least get your facts straight.  He went to the University of Texas.

@John4 um, you taking this too deep.. with the verbs and nouns jibba.. I can write one way and speak another way.. looks you are the fool to judge some one from what they have written off of a facebook page.. quit being so political.. And for the college mistake you just probably got your Roy Williams mixed up because Roy Williams did go to Oklahoma and play for dallas, but it was the safety Roy Williams that went to the sooners.. Roy Williams the receiver went to TX..  mistakes mistakes.. its all good.. its just a blog site..
