Devils sign recent draft picks Reece Scarlett, Damon Severson
The New Jersey Devils signed defensemen Reece Scarlett and Damon Severson to entry-level contracts, NHL.com reported Thursday afternoon.
Scarlett, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, was a sixth-round pick in 2011 (No. 159 overall) and had career highs in goals (9), assists (40) and points (49) in 71 games with the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League.
“Personally, I felt I really developed as an offensive defenseman,” Scarlett said. “After the draft I really wanted to prove to everyone that I should have gotten a lot higher than I did.”
Severson, originally from Brandon, Manitoba, was a second-round pick in 2012 (No. 60 overall). He played for the Kelowna Rockets in the Western Hockey League where he had 7 goals, 30 assists and 37 points in 56 games.
Prior to being signed, Severson spoke about his draft day experience and expectations for the season:
Devils assistant coach Scott Stevens was an influential mentor to both Scarlett and Severson during the development camp this summer.
