Dezmine Wells, an All-Atlantic 10 rookie last year who was expelled from Xavier following sexual assault charges, announced on Tuesday that he will enroll at the University of Maryland, according to Dave Telep of ESPN.com.

But per NCAA rules, Wells may not be able to play for the Terps next season:

Since he was expelled from Xavier, he will need to petition the NCAA for immediate eligibility. One of two scenarios will play out — Wells will either win his appeal and become immediately eligible or he will have to sit out this season.

Wells had visited Kentucky, Memphis, Maryland and Oregon throughout the end of August and early September before making the decision. If he does become eligible to play next season, Wells will pair with center Shaquille Cleare and gold medalist Jake Layman for the Terps.

Last season for Xavier, Wells was the highest scoring player to return to the team, averaging 9.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
