Connor Shaw injury: South Carolina QB leaves game with shoulder contusion

NCAAF

South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw departed Thursday’s season opener against Vanderbilt late in the first half with what the school announced as a shoulder contusion to his right (throwing) arm.

Shaw, a junior who started nine games last season, was hurt diving forward for a two-yard gain off a zone-read play, something that would never have happened in Spurrier’s old Fun ‘N’ Gun offense.

He was replaced by redshirt sophomore Dylan Thompson, who ran for five yards and threw an incompletion in his only two snaps before halftime. Thompson played in four games in 2011, completing both of his pass attempts, for 17 yards, and rushing five times, for 16 yards and a touchdown.

UPDATE: Shaw was able to return to action after missing the Gamecocks’ first two series of the second half.
