Lakers to retire uniform numbers of Shaquille O’Neal, Jamaal Wilkes

NBA

The Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday announced that, in addition to erecting the previously reported Kareem Abdul-Jabbar statue, the franchise will honor two other former stars this season.

Jamaal Wilkes will have his number 52 retired on Dec. 28, and Shaquille O’Neal will have his number 34 retired on April 2. They will be just the eighth and ninth players to be so honored by the franchise, joining Wilt Chamberlain (number 13), Elgin Baylor (22), Gail Goodrich (25), Magic Johnson (No. 32), Abdul-Jabbar (33), James Worthy (42) and Jerry West (No. 44).

Wilkes will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame next Friday. He was Rookie of the Year in 1975 with the Golden State Warriors and a three-time All-Star, twice with the Lakers. He also was a member of four NBA champions, three in L.A.

O’Neal, of course, is one of the most dominant big men in league history and was the league MVP in 2000, when he won the first of three championships in Los Angeles (he was named Finals MVP in all three series).
