Russell Wilson starting for Seahawks in Week 1, beating out Matt Flynn

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll named Russell Wilson the team’s starting quarterback in Week 1, The Seattle Times’ Danny O’Neil reported via Twitter.

The rookie Wilson, who the Seahawks selected in the third round of this year’s NFL Draft, beat out Matt Flynn for the starting job. The Seahawks signed Flynn, who was Aaron Rodgers’ much-hyped backup in Green Bay, to a three-year, $26 million deal this offseason.

Wilson has impressed the Seahawks with a stellar preseason thus far. On Friday, Wilson completed 13 of 19 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. He added 58 rushing yards on two attempts.

Carroll said Sunday night that Wilson “earned” the starting job.
