Reds prospect Billy Hamilton sets pro baseball record with 146th stolen base

MLB

Cincinnati Reds shortstop prospect Billy Hamilton (here’s SI.com’s Albert Chen on Hamilton earlier this summer) stole three bases in his first two at-bats on Tuesday to break the professional baseball record for stolen bases in a season. His mark is at 146 and counting.

Hamilton walked in the first inning and then stole second. He singled with two outs in the third and then stole second to tie the record and third to break it.

Hamilton stole 104 bags for Class A Bakersfield before being promoted to Double-A Pensacola, where he obviously has 42 steals.

Vince Coleman held the previous record of 145 in 1983.

Rickey Henderson has the record and well all saw that.  For these phony record freaks, please do not try to convince me that somebody in the 1880's all of a sudden has the records.  Baseball reference at this time is showing (3) people in 1887 stole over 110 bases.  These are ficticious records and shouldn't be even mentioned where is the actual facts.  Josh Gibson hit over 80 hrs one yr and thats not mentioned why in the hell should a white player who played for Rochester or a team called AA records be allowed as Major League Baseball Records.  I'm mad as hell that this is even being  tried.  Hugh Nicols stole more bases than Henderson and is being credited with the record

This is so rediculous when Ty Cobb had the record for most steals in a season we all know Maury Wills broke that record.  we remember Lou Brock breaking records, Vince Colman .  Now, somebody has went back to 1887 and now they have the record at 139 steals in a yr.  These records are too phony to even being going back to 1880's, it appears somebody relative wants their relative to have these records and it wasn't in the books in the 1970's or 1980's why in the hell is in the record book now in 2012.  Hugh Nicols in 1887 with 102 total hits stole that many bases.  I SMELL A LIE FROM OVER A 125 YRS AGO

where he obviously has 42 steals. - does the writer think people can add? Or check back to the story?

actually coleman did not. He reached the majors in 85, and his highest pro output was 110. In 1983, playing exclusively in A ball, he stole 145.

@MichaelA.Gould You expect me to do research? Forget that, I just guess and hope for the best. Anyway, I'd put money on this kid never breaking 100 in the majors.

Since Vince Coleman sis it in the Major Leagues, I think he still has the "record".

@EricDehm   Coleman never had the record.  Henderson stole 130 in 1982, before Coleman was in the league, and he never matched that.
