Tannehill, the No. 8 pick in the NFL Draft, was considered inexperienced because he only made 19 starts during his college career. But his coach at Texas A&M, Mike Sherman, is now the Dolphins’ offensive coordinator, and Tannehill likely knows the offense as well as anyone on the team.
Veteran David Garrard was expected to start the first preseason game for the Dolphins, but he injured his knee and is out for the rest of the preseason.
That left Matt Moore, who went 6-3 as Miami’s starter late last season, to compete with Tannehill. It appeared the competition was moving in Tannehill’s favor when he was tabbed to start the second preseason game.
“This is the best decision we can make at the given time,” Philbin said at his press conference today.
Tannehill is the fourth rookie quarterback named as a starter already this season. The Colts’ Andrew Luck, Redskins’ Robert Griffin III and Browns’ Brandon Weeden have already been named starters.
